In June 2017, I decided I wanted to do a triathlon, so I signed up to Ironman Austria for the following summer. My mother was battling cancer at the time and my dad was also quite ill. I felt I’d need an escape from reality and tri was going to be my coping mechanism. My dad passed September that year after a short battle. The last picture I have of my mum is of her in the hospital bed with the medal around her neck after Ironman Austria – she was so proud and delighted. Journals are full of studies showing us how to improve running technique, whether it’s by focusing on forefoot landing or counting cadence. But if a recent study by Linda Schucker and Lucy Parrington is to be believed, distraction lies behind a better running action. The researchers had a dozen runners stride out on a treadmill and either direct their attention to their running movement or a video. When it came to movement, Schucker would regularly shout out instructions like ‘pay attention to the push-off’ or ‘focus on landing’. The video projected an outdoor running track and was viewed from the perspective of the runner. A motion analysis system captured their form. Here are our top four to take into account… BREATHABILITY When purchasing a suit, you need to think about how long you’ll be realistically spending in it and which type of races you’ll likely be entering. GOGGLES You priority should be a decent, well-fitting pair of goggles. Make sure they fit your face. If a pair of goggles fit well, you should be able to swim without the straps on. Good goggles will feel comfortable, allow you to see clearly and keep you feeling relaxed. SWIM SUIT I’d always recommend something form fitting. It doesn’t have to be tight, but the baggier something is, the more drag and resistance it’ll create – making life harder and requiring more effort. BUILD UP CADENCE This is a great chance to practise running at an optimal cadence. Aim for as close to 180 strides per minute as you can, building up slowly over a few weeks. START LINE WARM-UP Do a few strides in your pre-race warm-up, ideally on the start line. Don’t do them for too long, though, otherwise you’ll tire yourself out. What does cadence mean in swimming, cycling and running? In swimming, it’s the number of times your arms complete individual strokes per minute; in biking it’s the number of times you complete a full revolution of the cranks per minute; and in running, it’s the total number of steps you take per minute. What’s the difference between X-ray, ultrasound and MRI? X-ray uses a small amount of radiation to quickly capture a single image of your anatomy to assess fractures or dislocations or disease (bone degeneration, infections or tumors). Ultrasounds uses sound waves instead of radio waves to produce a picture within your body in real-time, and can assess the condition of organs and soft issues. There are long-distance triathlons, and then there’s the one they call the ‘The Beast’. Embrunman began back in 1984 as a 750m swim, a 30km bike ride and 10km run – a gentle workout by the standards of today’s race. PRE-SWIM Before a swim, it’s always good to have fuel in the body – eating well means that you’ll have energy throughout your session. Try and eat something more than 30mins before to give it time to get into your system. A sandwich or porridge can give you a decent hit. DURING Throughout a session you shouldn’t need any food at all – unless you’re an expert and swimming for several hours. You may need fluids, though, as you’ll still sweat in the pool – water, squash or electrolyte sports drinks are all good options. It’s not a necessity, but certainly can be useful. Positive, ‘whole body’ rotation helps to improve streamlining and alignment, an effective extension at entry, high-elbow catch, and more power through the whole of the stroke. Investing time in practising rotational drills contributes significantly to improved stroke efficiency and power, with greater distance per stroke and reduced stroke counts. Whole body rotation should originate from the hips, linking to the shoulder rotations of the arm stroke, shoulders, hips and ankles all in alignment. The body should rotate side to side approximately 45°, requiring good core strength to maintain correct alignment and streamlining. The side-kick and rotisserie drills in this session really help the swimmer feel where the rotation from the hips and core begins, while the unco drill allows you to focus on the benefits of rotation to achieve good…

The start of the year is a great time to work on your pedal efficiency. I’m a big believer in using a variety of cadence in training, so you can be ready for all course profiles; whether it’s hilly, undulating or flat, if you introduce variety into your cadence you will soon start to see improvements in your performance. Every individual has an optimal cadence, so if you can track this through training then you can soon start to work out what your optimal range is. Using a rev counter can really help with this. Power devices have this built in, but if you’re running heart rate or working on the feel-good factor then I’d also start working on a variety of cadence from overgearing to high revs of 110+.…

The steady aerobic run – the staple of runners worldwide, or rather it should be. All too often these types of runs are performed too hard. But the goal of a steady aerobic run, among other things, is to improve fat-burning capacity and musculoskeletal resilience. And if you perform these types of runs too hard you can lose these important adaptations. This type of run is great for building aerobic endurance, and because it isn’t too stressful can fit easily into your schedule without overdoing it. Throughout the run you’ll also be asked to do some ‘strides’. This is simply just increasing your speed for a very short time, e.g. 5-10 strides. The Virgin London Marathon has become involved in a spat over not officially awarding finishers’ medals to the guide runners of visually impaired athletes. It was called out by the Royal National Institute of Blind People and British Blind Sport, the latter’s chief exec, Alaina MacGregor, telling The Telegraph that she was disappointed the event would “not offer recognition to these amazing individuals, without whom many visually impaired people would not be able to go running.” It was then picked up and swung around on social media, championing the cause for seemingly disgruntled guides. “If you believe recognition means awarding a medal, you’re missing the point” On face value, it might seem an anomaly worthy of correction. Lucy Charles-Barclay laced up her trail shoes and headed out for a wintry 18-mile run through nearby Epping Forest. There’s little unusual about that for a professional triathlete, except just hours earlier, Lucy and her coach and training mate Reece were partying the night away having exchanged nuptials. “That was our honeymoon. ANTI-INFLAMMATORY Ginger is a flowering plant with many known medicinal properties, namely anti-inflammatory effects due to its high concentration of the compounds gingerols, paradols and shogaols. Curcumin is a member of the ginger family and has recently been extensively studied as an ergogenic aid for the athletic population. A study by Nakhostin-Roohi et al (2016) showed that a 150mg dose of curcumin taken immediately post-intensive exercise decreased the number of inflammatory biomarkers against a control group. While more studies are needed to identify exact doses and specificity to triathletes, there’s some indication that the use of ginger, and particularly curcumin, can help reduce inflammation post-intensive exercise. What happens if you accidentally stray off course in a tri race? According to British Triathlon rule 3.7 a) (xii) if you go off course you face disqualification, unless ‘the competitor returns to the point at which he or she left the course, or a point on the course prior to it, and then completes the course correctly.’ What’s the difference between a running power meter and a cycling power meter?
