Low-glycogen training’s a popular triathlete strategy, the idea being that depleting the body of carbohydrates shifts fuelling demands to fat. It’s particularly popular after a night’s fast. Now, recent research out of Japan suggests that on days when you’re seeking strength gains rather than metabolic, your breakfast should include a high hit of protein. The team recruited healthy men aged between 18 and 26 with each undertaking a 12-week resistance programme. They followed the same plan but different nutritional intakes. The ‘high breakfast’ (HBR) group consumed 0.33g/kg protein at breakfast compared to the ‘low breakfast’ (LBR) group’s 0.12g/kg protein. The result? This is an interesting time for triathletes. Some will eek out a race or two before the shortened season finishes; others have hung up their rarely-used 2020 trisuit and are focusing on 2021. Ultimately, there’s no ‘one rule fits all’, so you should feel free to experiment with how you spend the next few months. But note this: there’s significant evidence to suggest that mixing up your training environments is beneficial for both the pure physical improvements it can elicit and the variety of working out in different locations. Can I train through a cold? It’s a good question and one which we turn your attention to the ‘neck check’. If you exhibit above-neck symptoms, like a runny nose or scratchy throat, you can train but keep it easy, like zones one and two. Keep the session short but if you feel worse during your warm-up, stop and rest. Below-neck symptoms, like a strong cough and a chest cold, don’t train as you could well have an acute viral infection. I hear that a more alkaline diet can help my triathlon as I age. Is that right? The 2004 Ironman World Championship is down in the record books as Natasha Badmann’s fifth victory, but the Swiss was more than two miles down the road when a 35-year-old German by the name of Nina Kraft took the tape. Looking uneasy at her success, it was announced shortly afterwards that Kraft had tested positive for the blood-boosting drug erythropoietin. She was subsequently banned for two years. Kraft gave few interviews, but one to German Triathlon Magazine in 2007 recounted her return to racing Ironman in Malaysia. OLDER, STRONGER, FASTER Sorry, I’m a bit late to the party here, having only just read the letter from Louise McKnight in the September edition of 220 regarding women in triathlon and avoiding cut-off times when you’re older. As a clinician, I work with athletes of all abilities and feel profoundly that not only should Louise be proud of what she’s achieving mentally and psychologically by participating in triathlons, but she’s also partaking in a higher level of physical activity that’s associated with a decrease in ‘all-cause mortality’. However, there’s one area that’s overlooked in women’s sport – especially older women – and that’s the issue of strengthening. RUN SESSION 10 x 3mins at 6% incline to 2mins easy at 0%. The intervals are aerobic – not threshold – so adjust speed accordingly and work up to this quantity. If you’re feeling good, end the session with a short tempo run. BIKE SESSION 3 x 40mins in your ‘sweet spot’ with low cadence (60-70rpm). Sweet spot for me is 300-340 watts. The not too distant past saw a clear delineation between race and training run shoes. Race shoes were little more than a stretch of fabric; off-season shoes were heavy. Advancements have seen race shoes retain their lithe construction but with less sacrifice to comfort; off-season shoes have retained cushioning, lost mass and improved flexibility. The result is high-mileage shoes that, at least for some here, could transfer to races. All that said, consuming mile after mile in search of faster 2021 race performance is their primary remit, meaning every shoe here’s designed with greater cushioning to absorb stresses and reduce injury potential. RESEARCH NEW AREAS Look for trails that offer great running and mountain-biking routes. Get muddy and enjoy the new views. Ask your training friends for their advice. BUY THE RIGHT KIT Make sure your mountain bike is up to the job, and you’ll need a decent pair of trail-run shoes if you don’t want to destroy your best trainers. DON’T BE AFRAID Hit the very hard interval sections on the bike and run with real force. Be prepared to get out of your comfort zone on the tough hill rep sessions. They hurt but they help. I swam all the publicly accessible lakes in the Lake District over three days – a total of 71km. There are 13 of them, ranging from the shortest at Brotherswater (500m) to the longest – Windermere – that’s about 17km. Windermere was a funny one. During lockdown, it’d been 19°C. Two weeks before the challenge, a low pressure came through and it dropped to 14°C. So I had to swim hard to build up heat… and racked up a new 5km PB at the start! I wore four wetsuits to prevent the transmission of invasive species between lakes. They can spread rapidly and affect things like algae diversity. I could see the difference in the water with the visibility in some lakes far clearer than others. A high point? Waswater.…
