Over the years on 220 I’ve been lucky enough to meet some of my all-time heroes. Time spent with Dave Scott, Chrissie Wellington, Tim Don and Lucy Charles-Barclay as well as (of course!) the Brownlee brothers will always be great memories. This issue is a really special one though, as we step outside the world of triathlon to look at how the modern-day legends of swim, bike and run make it through the toughest of races. Enter Hector Pardoe, Tao Geoghegan Hart and Jasmin Paris, who share their discipline-specific advice (p28). First up, a confession. These reviews were meant to appear in the same issue as the men’s running jackets (issue 435) but thanks to a nasty dose of flu and bronchitis (yes, the bugs got me good this year) testing had to be delayed. On the plus side though, we had such a great response from brands this year that the eight new and updated jackets here wouldn’t have fit in the same issue anyway. While the name might remind you of sports day at school (don’t drop the baton!), racing a triathlon relay comes in a couple of different formats. On the one hand you have the mixed relay, which is the type you might have seen professional athletes racing, for example at the Olympic Games, where each athlete must complete each leg (so everyone in the team swims, bikes and runs). More common in age-group racing is a team relay, where each member of the team takes one or two disciplines each. The multisport watch market is an evolving one, with computer-processing speed accelerating and feature lists lengthening. But one of the greatest advancements of recent times has been the AMOLED screen. AMOLED, meaning Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode, is a modified version of an OLED display. OLED means Organic Light-Emitting Diode. AMOLED technology is commonly used in mobile phones and televisions thanks to its incredibly crisp, colourful display. With over 2,000 stores in 79 countries, French outfit Decathlon’s the largest sporting goods retailer in the world. In the UK, its presence has simmered rather than boiled with around 50 stores up and down the country. For the unfamiliar, Decathlon’s seemingly a hybrid of Sports Direct meets Go Outdoor with your shopping basket containing anything from sledges to a pair of football socks. It also stocks bikes; more precisely, it stocks its own range of bikes. In 2018, Triban replaced B’twin as its lower-priced offering.
