Visual effects supervisor Matt Baer on creating explosive effects with a 2D look “We were inspired by some illustrations that our art department had done and had seen in other films,” remarks Baer. “The goal was not to make it look like a fluid simulation. We wanted to represent the cooler and hotter areas of an explosion in a much more graphic way. From the base of that explosion, it was represented with a different type of geometry that didn’t go through a volume or fluid-based simulation.
