SIZED TO FIT The cozy space—12.5 feet long by three feet wide—sits beneath a Platt Park home’s basement stairs, a perfect spot for a miniature play zone for two young brothers, ages 3 and 4. “I really wanted to keep the floor space open and give them a creative and secret space to play,” says Angela Neese Rathbun, a lawyer turned DIY designer and author of the Blue I Style blog. “Like a secret hideaway.” But not too secret: The nook has a Dutch (half) door she converted from a full door so she and her husband can keep an eye on the kids. 1 CLASSIC EASY BREEZY This vibrant remodel shows us why brightly painted cabinets and brass fixtures are oh-so-right. When Lori and Josh Nothwang redid their Boulder bungalow, they had a color scheme in mind. “We wanted a black and white house,” Lori says of the home’s classic exterior palette, “but I’ve always been the person who loves navy.” So began the concept for the new kitchen’s look. “It’s funny to call patterned tile a trend,” says Devon Tobin of Denver’s Duet Design Group, who designed this kitchen. “It’s Eastern-inspired design—travel to Morocco, Vietnam, Bali, Spain, and it’s everywhere—but we’re catching on in the United States.” For good reason. Painted or stamped tiles are durable, and they bring color, texture, and life to just about any space, from entryways and kitchen backsplashes to powder room floors. RENOVATIONS DON’T have to be complicated. Sometimes the simplest way to take a space from sparse to sparkling is to change up the lighting. This Turkish metal globe pendant ($450) from Denver’s Lolo Rugs and Gifts can alter the entire feel of a room with the mesmerizing patterns it projects. TOM GALLAGHER HAS always been good at math. In high school, when he added up his skills—clever with numbers, a solid drawer, introverted, interested in the arts—the equation led to just one career: architecture. After earning his master’s degree at the University of Nebraska, he moved to Colorado—and, like many transplants, never left.
