The story of Paonia’s Zephyros Farm and Garden began at a wedding, when Daphne Yannakakis—on a break from working at a perennial farm in Germany—was “set up with the mushroom farmer,” she says, at a friend’s California nuptials. Eighteen years (and 15 growing seasons) later, Yannakakis and her now-husband, Denver-area native Don Lareau, are cultivating flowers and designing arrangements for events that bring people together—including weddings held on their pastoral 35-acre property. When architect Dominique Gettliffe’s clients hired him to design their new home near Salida, they requested what most people secretly long for (whether or not they’re willing to admit it): a wow moment just inside the front door. But, as so often happens, there was a challenge. “The site is already ‘wow’—it overlooks Mt. Harvard and the Collegiate Peaks—but it slopes to the north, which meant if architectural elements weren’t perfect, too much heat could be lost and gained throughout the day,” says Gettliffe, whose eponymous firm—which has offices in Boulder and Managua, Nicaragua—specializes in passive-solar architecture. Good design is, at its core, good problem-solving. And the problems that stacked up before architects E.J. Meade and Cary D’Alo Place of Arch 11 as they designed this house were notable: Boulder residents Christopher McKee and Violeta Chapin wanted a functional family home that captured the essence of indoor-outdoor living, and they wanted it built on a small (.17-acre), tree-dotted, sloping lot that retained water. They needed more living space than their previous home had offered, and McKee, a South Florida native, also wanted livable outdoor spaces like those he had grown up with on the coast.
