Remember traveling? Let’s reminisce: In the Before Times, hopping on a plane—sans face mask, hand sanitizer, and constant worry—to venture to a faraway place was a somewhat regular occurrence. You’d spend a week or two sipping fruity drinks on sandy beaches, wandering along centuries-old cobblestone streets, or experiencing a new-to-you city through its local fare. Back-to-back meetings and piles of laundry were put on hold, and maybe you’d even silence your phone for a while. I’m optimistic that those days will return (soon!). But, in the meantime, you might be relying on your home’s outdoor spaces to provide a similar sense of escape. STEP ONE LAY THE GROUNDWORK To start, the Pappases tackled the 7-by-15-foot lower level of the patio. Because they didn’t have the budget to jackhammer out the concrete and install a grassy yard, they laid a patch of pet turf to give the illusion of grass. Then the couple revived the dingy concrete patio nearer to the house, giving it a good power-wash and some TLC in the form of backer rod (to fill cracks) and a self-leveling sealant. They painted it with Clark & Kensington exterior paint in a hue color-matched to Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee, and Cait (with help from her mother and mother-in-law) stenciled a geometric pattern from Royal Design Studio onto the surface. There are places I go when I start to feel the weight of recent world events. Molly Reinhardt was helping a fellow design professional pack up to move across the country when she came upon a stash of unwanted textile samples—which gave her an idea. “I thought, ‘Instead of tossing all this expensive fabric into the landfill, what if someone turned it into something beautiful?’” she says.
