“I practically came out of the womb with crayons in my hands,” says Boulder artist Julie Maren, who remembers making magazines and walnut-shell creatures as a child, and being particularly fond of the kids’ craft kits that transfer drawings onto melamine keepsake plates. “That was my medium of choice in the ’70s,” she says. To avoid overwhelming this small space, Lewis stuck with white frames and mats for each element. “You want to offer a good chunk of impact without being too intense,” she says. Remodeling this two-story Uptown apartment presented designer Katie Schroder with a challenge: “The husband is very conservative; the wife is not,” she says. “She loved the fact that we are a very color-forward firm, but he was a little scared.” Living with color wasn’t entirely unfamiliar to the couple. For years, they’ve been amassing a collection of 20th-century modern art that includes vibrant works by Avedon, Miró, and Warhol, and the wife collects midcentury American glass, “particularly for its bright colors,” she says. If you subscribe to the perennial, powder-room-as-a-jewel-box line of thinking, you might gravitate to a more sophisticated and toned-down aesthetic for your space. This timeless look rarely disappoints. But to make it work, there are some design guidelines to follow: In a successful classic-style powder room, the colors are typically neutral and the wallcoverings subdued or linear. Doug Kacena likes to say that the 1880s brick building housing his LoDo art gallery, K Contemporary, is a kind of church. “All the artwork are prayers, and I’m the monk who lives in the back,” he says. Sunlight spilling through the trio of skylights in Kacena’s quarters—on the second floor of the gallery space—casts a heavenly glow on his personal art collection, which includes this kaleidoscopic, abstract oil and mixed-media painting by South Korean artist Ken Gun Min.
