Our neighbouring planet has held an allure over scientists for a long time, because we think it was once like Earth. Billions or perhaps even just hundreds of millions of years ago, the Red Planet likely had oceans and seas on its surface, providing potential habitats for life. Over time, however, it lost its atmosphere, the water boiled away, and today the surface is a barren, desolate wasteland.
