NORMAN JEAN ROY Even though actresses spend their careers working on screen, they’re not always comfortable posing for photographs. Elizabeth Banks, a natural in front of the camera, is an exception. “She’s a wonderful collaborator, beautiful and sexy,” says Roy, who photographed her in a historic Manhattan mansion for “Broad Appeal.” Roy would suggest positions or moods, and Banks immediately knew how to enact them with a shift of her head or the placement of her hands. Not that Roy was surprised: “I have photographed her many times, and I always love it.” JENNY BAILLY “Our readers test almost as many products as we do,” says Bailly, Allure’s beauty director. “We love to find out which ones they come back to over and over again.” While editing the magazine’s annual…

Jim Hammer The cosmetic chemist has developed hair products, cosmetics, and dietary supplements for 28 years. Now, Hammer analyzes Allure Readers’ Choice products. What advancement has chemists buzzing? “Nanotechnology— shrinking ingredients’ particle sizes. But there is concern that it is so functional, ingredients could penetrate too deep and even get into the bloodstream.” Does your job make shopping for products easier? “I’m the guy who’s staring at the label for a long time. I guess it makes shopping lengthier. But I’m probably happier with what I end up with.” What beauty myth would you like to debunk? “There are so many trendy ingredients added to skin care in tiny amounts. But often, what are effective are the base formulation and ingredients in larger amounts, like the emollient esters.” Katherine Lai…

1 Despite getting stuck in gridlocked traffic, a bare-faced Banks arrived only a few minutes late for her shoot with photographer Norman Jean Roy—her second Allure cover. She headed straight to the hair and makeup chair, still wearing her red Max Mara coat and leather pants. 2 The sprawling marble floors and ornate wainscoting of a historic mansion in New York City gave a rich feel to the pictures. 3 During breaks, Banks FaceTimed with her husband and two sons, who were in Los Angeles eating breakfast. She also watched Pitch Perfect 2 clips on her phone. 4 When an Allure editor asked to take a picture of Banks’s purse, the actress told her to “dig through it.” Two finds: her sunglasses and gold hairpin. Makeup Lesson For a fake…
