Allure, the first and only magazine devoted to beauty, is an insider's guide to a woman's total image. Allure investigates and celebrates beauty and fashion with objectivity and candor, and places appearance in a larger cultural context.
Who is that? There appeared to be somebody new on the set of Allure’s cover shoot with Selena Gomez. There was Selena, of course, who appears on our cover for the first time, but we know Selena when we see her, and this person looks, no offense, more like a civilian than a former Disney actor turned musician turned decidedly non-Disney actor turned founder of her own line of cosmetics. (And besides, Selena had her own trailer on the shoot, so…) Oh! It’s the shoot’s “designated supervisor,” a new role developed by Condé Nast to make sure, like a nun at a school dance, that bodies remain clean, apart, and no hotter than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. The October cover was one of the first photo shoots Allure conducted in the…
After 10 months without a trim, my hair had gotten long. Like Cher in the ’70s long. Postpartum hair loss had also set in about a month earlier, which meant I had been pulling tumbleweed-size clumps out of the shower hair catcher. I knew some people had returned to salons, with different levels of precautions, but with a five-month-old at home I was reluctant. So my mermaid hair was fast becoming Swamp Thing hair. I needed to take matters into my own hands. I had already given my son and older daughter trims with little drama, and de-mulleted my husband with clippers (I’m only mildly embarrassed to admit that I came this close to googling “Flowbee” during that time). But my own hair presented some new challenges: 1) Viewing the…

Of all the flower barrettes on the fall 2020 runways (and there were plenty), Tom Ford’s were our favorite reminder to live a little—or actually, a lot. The oversize blooms were crafted from feathers in burnished metallics (gold, bronze) or tropical brights (blue, pink), and paired with matching—and gigantic—feather earrings. Before clipping in the barrettes, hairstylist Duffy wove hair into tight French twists and tamped down flyaways using L’Oréal Paris Elnett Hairspray. He then placed the flowers right along the hairline—a less-expected spot than the usual bloom above the ear. Now we’re inspired to get all dressed up, even if it’s just for the world’s most glamorous Whole Foods run.…
The Minimalist. If you plucked all the whimsy of Tom Ford’s feather accessories but dialed down the intensity several notches, you’d get Ariana Boussard-Reifel’s slim earrings with Lelet NY’s simple daisy clips. The Sophisticate. A little glitz makes this pairing look put together but playful. Ashley Williams’s “Fire” hairpins and Suzanna Dai’s feather earrings twinkle with rhinestones. The Bohemian. These aqua Tuleste feather earrings and the rainbow Epona Valley flower clip have the swagger of really cool vintage accessories you traveled the globe to find. Groovy, no? The Modernist. Jennifer Behr’s geometric hairpins have an Art Deco vibe that we love, and Lizzie Fortunato’s gold earrings remind us of abstract feathers. Put them together and you’ve got a masterpiece. beauty box spoiler alert SPARKLES FLY More is more when it…
ALLURE: Where have you been riding out the pandemic? A.H.: Thirty-five years ago I bought myself a little ranch up near the Sequoia National Forest [in California], and that’s where I am now. I have nine baby piglets, 14 kittens, and endless ducks and chickens and goats. I have a new little Shetland pony that I’ve been training, so it’s all pretty cute. ALLURE: It sounds like paradise. A.H.: It makes me very happy to be able to spend time here. So actually, my secret is that I’m having a good time. It was my secret until I told you. ALLURE: I heard you traveled to Italy to shoot the fragrance campaign…. A.H.: Yeah, right before the world crashed. The girls were great [singer Florence Welch, actor Jodie Turner-Smith, and…
