DALLAS – One of the most prestigious awards in American sports has a new owner as Yale halfback Clint Frank’s 1937 Heisman Trophy commanded a winning bid of $312,000 in Heritage Auctions’ Oct. 18-19 Sports Collectibles Auction. Terra cotta bird decanter may be a sleeper

QI would like some information on this map I found in my neighbor’s trash after his wife died and he was mourning. It measures 12 3/4” wide by 18 1/2” high. It has 5 heads (faces) at the top of the map, and 5 heads (faces) at the bottom (top part). It’s marked: Mare IndicvavEthiopia - Mare - Interior Pra Sodum The bottom of the map has a banner with “Virginia” on it. The right top half has a figure of an American Indian. ‘Antique,’ ‘Vintage’ or ‘Collectible’ Grasping the importance of accurate descriptions

I can’t hold it in. I’m going to complain. Complaining is not something I often do. In fact, I think the last time I complained was in 1979 during the Carter Administration when gasoline was rationed. Today, however, I read something about which I would like to grumble. If you collect antiques of any type, you’ll know exactly what I mean. At what point did the words “antique,” “collectible” and “vintage” become interchangeable? Although I do find the misuse of these words irritating it was a new designation I encountered that kicked off the nuclear football. While looking at items on Etsy today I came across something listed as “Pre-vintage.” Pre-vintage? Seriously? One person’s junk, is another’s treasure. Such is the mindset behind Relics Midwest, 406 S. First Ave., owned and operated by Ron Fisher. Few people realize how important copper is to the various arts and antiques movements during the past 500 years. San Francisco statue that some call racist is removed

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – A 19th century statue near San Francisco’s City Hall that some said is racist and demeaning to indigenous people was removed and put into storage. A group of Native Americans chanted, beat drums and burned sage as the workers used a crane to take down the statue depicting a Native American at the feet of a Spanish cowboy and a Catholic missionary. It was part of a group of statues depicting the founding of California. Native American activists tried to have the statue removed for decades. They renewed efforts last year after clashes broke out across the U.S. over Confederate monuments. The San Francisco Board of Appeals voted unanimously Sept. 14 for the removal of the statue, which had been in its location for 124 years.…

12-pound Moon Rock sells for more than $600K at auction

BOSTON – An extremely rare lunar meteorite sold for $612,500 according to Boston-based RR Auction. The meteorite was discovered in a remote area of Mauritania, in the deserts of Northwest Africa in 2017. Mich. man must dismantle art for violating junk ordinance

ST. JOHNS, Mich. (AP) – A blue plastic duck is all that can remain of a Michigan man’s outdoor art installation after a district judge ruled that he must remove thousands of found objects featured in the project because they violate an anti-junk ordinance. Clinton County District Court Judge Michael Clarizio on Oct. 31 gave artist Robert Park 45 days to remove the items along a pathway on his property, The Lansing State Journal reports. Park must also pay $250 in fines and court costs. Park, 72, spent two years creating “The Blue Loop,” which displays upcycled blue items along a 1,000-foot-long path. Benton’s hellish vision of World War II on display as group

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – A collection of Thomas Hart Benton paintings highlighting the destruction of World War II are on display as a set for the first time in nearly two decades. The Columbia Missourian reports that the “Perilous Visions” exhibition features the eight-painting “Year of Peril” series and two others from the famed Missouri artist. They’re hanging for now at the State Historical Society of Missouri headquarters at the University of Missouri’s Ellis Library. Woman sentenced to prison for stealing from museum

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) – A Massachusetts woman who pleaded guilty to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the museum where she worked has been sentenced to 20 months in prison. A federal judge put 36-year-old Jennifer Delorey McNamara behind bars even though her lawyer argued for no prison time. McNamara was the former business manager at the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton. Prosecutors say she embezzled money from the museum by failing to deposit cash into the museum bank account and issuing unauthorized payments to herself. McNamara pleaded guilty to wire fraud in April. She says the thefts were fueled by her addiction to opioids. McNamara apologized, saying she will pay back the museum’s insurance company and dedicate her life to helping those in recovery.…

New Orleans museum showing art collected by namesake duke

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – The New Orleans Museum of Art is winding up the city’s tricentennial with an exhibition of dozens of paintings collected by the man the city is named for: Philippe II, Duke of Orleans. Some of you may recall that Jay and I are whittling down our “bucket list” since semi-retiring about 18 months ago. Attending the antiques show in Round Top, Texas has been on my list for the better part of two decades and we finally made it! Magnifying lamp puts light where you need it

Like many of Antique Trader’s readers, I’m getting on in years. I’ll let you in on a secret: I’m “only” 51 and my eyes are aging faster than most. I’ve already been dealing with a serious eye condition for ten years. I see an ophthalmologist for regular treatment to keep blindness at bay. Then, late last year I was dealt another blow – cataracts. (No wonder it always felt like my eyeglasses were dirty!) From general store to antiques, store survives test of time

GRADYVILLE, Pa. (AP) – Communities are often defined on the stability of their local businesses. For Gradyville that means The Den of Antiquity, a former general store turned antique shop that has stood at the crossroads of Gradyville and Middletown roads for more than 90 years. NEW HAMBURG, Ontario, Canada – Three green Chippewa spinner lures made circa 1910 by the Immell Bait & Tackle Company (USA) brought a combined CA$24,780, and a clever Canadian-made circa 1930 Lurette No. 2 “living bait lure” was reeled in for CA$3,750 (a new record price for the lure) at an auction held Oct. 19-20 by Miller & Miller Auctions, Ltd. The sale was held online and in Miller & Miller’s gallery at 59 Webster Street in New Hamburg, Ontario. Featured was the single-owner lifetime collection of fishing lures, decoys and reels of the late Bob Ronson. Around 700 of the 724 lots that came up for bid were from Ronson’s vast collection. Neil Armstrong memorabilia fetches $7.5 million

DALLAS (AP) – Memorabilia that belonged to the first man to set foot on the moon, Neil Armstrong, has fetched more than $7.4 million at auction. Dallas-based Heritage Auctions says the item that sold for the highest price, $468,500, at the Nov. 3 auction was Armstrong’s spacecraft ID plate from Apollo 11’s lunar module Eagle. Also sold were a fragment from the propeller and a section of the wing from the Wright brothers’ Flyer, the first heavier-than-air self-powered aircraft, which each sold for $275,000. The flight suit Armstrong wore aboard Gemini 8, the 1966 mission that performed the first docking of two spacecraft in flight, brought the astronaut’s family $109,375.
