While on a recent appraisal in a home occupied by the same family for about 80 years I entered a small dimly-lit bedroom that had been used as a storage room for almost as long as the family had been in residence. Tucked away amid a pile of 78 rpm records, clothing, bayonets, and broken Japanese swords was a pair of bookends in the form of a kneeling Native American man; they appeared to be bronze. The room was lit with only sunlight from a small window but close examination revealed them to be bronze-clad. The foundry mark revealed they were made by the Pompeian Bronze Company in New York. The dovetail drawer joint, from the earliest crudely cut, single pin joint of the 17th century to the highly refined, machine made dovetails of the 20th century, has been the joint of choice for most American cabinetmakers. But the dovetail joint is not the only way to make a drawer work. Drawer construction began with non-dovetailed joints, using the nailed rabbet joint, a 17th century technique which has survived through the centuries and is still in use today in low-load, inexpensive furniture because of its ease of construction and the resulting low cost. This single cut joint is an ideal application of machinery to furniture making and today makes use of high tech modern glues and low cost fasteners, turned out by the billions in brad and staple factories. SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) – Santa Fe’s Georgia O’Keeffe Museum sold two paintings for more than $19.5 million. The Albuquerque Journal reports “A Street,” from 1926, and 1928’s “Calla Lilies on Red” sold in Sotheby’s contemporary art auction Nov. 14 in New York. “A Street,” a painting from O’Keeffe’s small series of New York cityscapes, sold for $13,282,500. It went into the auction with an estimated value of between $12 million and $18 million. “Calla Lilies on Red,” one of several paintings the legendary artist made depicting the flower, sold below its $8 million-$12 million estimated value, at $6,282,700.…

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – The second of two men convicted of burglarizing a tribal heritage center on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation has been sentenced. The U.S. Attorney’s Offi ce says 30-year-old Henry Three Legs was recently sentenced to two months in federal prison, 10 months of home confinement, 2 years of supervised release and more than $23,000 in restitution. Authorities say Three Legs and Brian One Feather stole cultural and craft items from the Howard V. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center in Eagle Butte in June 2012. One Feather was sentenced in 2014 to 1 1/2 years in prison and two years of supervised released.…

SEDALIA, Mo. (AP) – A former volunteer at a small Missouri museum has been sentenced to five years of probation for stealing Civil War and World War I artifacts and then rearranging display cases to conceal the thefts. The Sedalia Democrat reports that 39-year-old Terry Cockrell was a 2010 Sedalia mayoral candidate who volunteered at the Pettis County Museum for years before moving to Coffeyville, Kansas. He pleaded guilty Oct. 4 to one count of felony stealing $750 or more. Prosecutors agreed to drop a second charge of stealing as part of a plea agreement. He is required to pay almost $3,000 in restitution and court costs. He confessed in April to stealing and selling six artifacts, mostly firearms. DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) – A traveling exhibit featuring Norman Rockwell’s iconic “Four Freedoms” paintings is on display in the Detroit area. “Enduring Ideals: Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedoms “ runs through Jan. 13 at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation [www.thehenryford.org] in Dearborn. Rockwell’s 1943 illustrations, which are among the most famous in American history, were a response to President Franklin Roosevelt’s “Four Freedoms” speech from two years earlier. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The Conestoga wagon that brought early settlers from Virginia in the 1800s, the hat Andrew Jackson wore to his presidential inauguration in 1829 and an 1863 Civil War cannon are several familiar artifacts that will be integrated in the new Tennessee State Museum. The Tennessean reports the $160 million museum opened Oct. 4 in Nashville and admission is free. It will be more interactive, using video and touch screens to help visitors experience Tennessee’s history as if they were living then. The museum also covers more time than its predecessor, focusing from prehistoric days to today. WASHINGTON (AP) – A photograph showing Adolf Hitler embracing a young girl who had a Jewish grandmother has sold at auction for more than $11,000. The Washington Post reports the black-and-white image taken by Heinrich Hoffmann and inscribed by Hitler in dark blue ink shows him smiling as he embraces Rosa Bernile Nienau in 1933 at his mountainside retreat. The paper reports the image was deployed as propaganda at a time when the Nazi leader was being presented to the world as a kindly figure. Alexander Historical Auctions of Chesapeake City, Maryland, sold the photo Nov. 13 for $11,520. Q We inherited this handmade plow that the curator of our museum said he thought was around 200 years old. It appears to be hickory. We are in southwest Oklahoma and this wood is not native to this area. The plow has two small rudders that are inserted either vertical or horizontal for some reason. LONDON – A marked surge in footfall at Stampex International exhibition, held in September and sponsored by Stanley Gibbons, has led to much excitement surrounding the hobby of stamp collecting. A record number of attendees reported dealers, alongside an increase in sales and consumer spending. With the hobby boasting famous enthusiasts including Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Stuart Weitzman and HM Queen Elizabeth II, there are many reasons stamp collecting is a talking point in key circles; particularly among gentlemen over 50 years old, who lead busy working lives and are looking to secure a hobby that will help them manage stress and anxiety. GERING, Neb. (AP) – Ledger books were most commonly used to keep track of accounting, but they also had another purpose. Many American Indians drew pictures and scenes from life inside their pages, creating a unique account of history. Some of that work can be seen in a temporary exhibit at the Legacy of the Plains Museum. One such ledger drawn by Lakota Sioux Red Hawk contains colorful drawings of life as a Sioux. Many of the drawings are of himself. “I think it’s great he drew himself and not just once. MOUNDVILLE, Ala. (AP) – The recent recovery of three Native American artifacts stolen nearly 40 years ago could be the thread that unravels the mystery of the greatest antiquities theft in this part of the world. Hundreds of pottery vessels, bottles, bowls, ornaments and jewelry items were stolen from the Erskine Ramsay Archaeological Repository at the University of Alabama’s Moundville Archaeological Park in 1980. It was a shot in the dark when archaeologists and others contributed to a reward fund for information, which was announced in May. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Georgia O’Keeffe’s artwork is some of the most recognizable of modern times. Even so, if you’ve never actually seen O’Keeffe’s paintings up-close and in-person, “The Beyond: Georgia O’Keeffe and Contemporary Art” is a revelation. Decorative compacts, small vanity cases containing powder, lipstick, mirrors, or more, were fashionable from the early 1900s through the 1960s. When they fell from use, most were relegated to grandmothers’ dresser drawers and attics. Simple or sumptuous, compacts reflect not only the evolution of design, but also women’s age-old fascination with beauty. The fair sex has long used paints and powders, stored in glass, wood, bone, or gold containers, to lighten their skin and brighten their cheeks. Though cosmetics were often dangerous or deemed vulgar and improper over time, British and American women, by the mid-1880s, often indulged discreetly. GENEVA (AP) – A large, drop-shaped natural pearl pendant sold for a hammer price of $32 million at an auction of jewelry that once belonged to French Queen Marie Antoinette, which Sotheby’s is calling a record price for a pearl at auction. The “Queen Marie Antoinette’s Pearl,” a diamond-and-pearl pendant, was among the highlight offerings on the block at the Sotheby’s sale of jewelry from the Bourbon-Parma dynasty. LISBON FALLS, Maine - A lifetime collection of almost 6,000 autographs, including but not limited to artists, astronauts, authors, entertainers and musicians, and sports figures will be available for private sale at Daniel Buck Auctions, Inc. in Lisbon Falls, Maine. The late owner and collector of the autographs was a teacher from Lewiston, Maine in the 1970s-1990s who collected the autographs as part of a long-term school project to show his students that they could reach out to famous people from around the world. JERUSALEM (AP) – A handwritten letter written by Albert Einstein warning of the dangers of growing nationalism and anti-Semitism years before the Nazis rose to power has been sold for nearly $40,000. The Kedem Auction House says the previously unknown letter, brought forward by an anonymous collector, fetched $39,360 in bidding in Jerusalem on Nov. 13. Einstein wrote the letter to his sister after going into hiding in 1922 following the assassination of Germany’s Jewish foreign minister by right-wing extremists. Police had warned the Jewish scientist that his life could be in danger too. “Here are brewing economically and politically dark times, so I’m happy to be able to get away from everything,” he wrote. GENEVA (AP) – Christie’s sold the “Pink Legacy” diamond at auction Nov. 13 for more than $50 million including fees, saying it’s a new world record price per carat for a pink diamond. Christie’s said renowned jeweler Harry Winston was the buyer. The auction house had expected to fetch $30 million to $50 million for the nearly 19-carat, rectangular-cut stone, the largest fancy vivid pink diamond that it has ever put under the hammer.á It was the standout offering at Christie’s fall jewelry auction in Geneva. BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) – A Romanian novelist who thought she had found a painting by Pablo Picasso stolen from a museum in the Netherlands six years ago seems to have been the victim of a prank. Mira Feticu said an anonymous tip led her to the picture – supposedly Picasso’s Tete d’Arlequin – under a tree in eastern Romania, and she handed it to the Dutch embassy. Frank Westerman, a Dutch journalist who accompanied Feticu to Romania, wrote on Facebook that the pair had been hoodwinked. “The supposed lost Picasso was put there by two Belgian theater makers.” Romania’s Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism said Nov. 18 it was examining the circumstances of the discovery. CODY, Wyo. (AP) – A Wyoming fine art sale with a Western theme once again saw more than $1 million worth of art sold during the event. The Cody Enterprise reports the gross revenue of the Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale, including ticket sales and sponsorships, is estimated at $1.3 million. At the end of the auctions, more than $1.28 million worth of art was sold. Last year, $1.05 million worth of art was auctioned off. The highest selling piece this year again went to Michael Ome Untiedt, whose piece sold for $31,000. More than 750 people attended the live auction and dinner Sept. 21 and the Quick Draw on Sept. 22. TICONDEROGA, N.Y. (AP) – A display of Benedict Arnold’s hair at Fort Ticonderoga [www.fortticonderoga.org] this year proved so popular that curators dug into the museum’s vast collection to see what other 18th century curiosities they could find. Among the items they turned up: locks of George Washington’s hair and a rib bone from a woman killed by British-allied American Indians during the Revolutionary War’s 1777 Saratoga campaign. NEW YORK (AP) – A small but elegant exhibit tucked amid the American period rooms on the second floor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art explores the little-known story behind Chippendale furniture, and how one young man’s bold idea to create a detailed manifesto about chairs and tables for the British elite transformed his name into an enduring style. “Chippendale’s Director: The Designs and Legacy of a Furniture Maker” reveals how Thomas Chippendale, an 18th century artisan of humble origins, came up with a new way of designing, marketing and producing furniture. ROCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – One poster in a recently discovered trove vilifies the Nazis with a sword through a Bible and the words “This Is the Enemy.” Some encouraged self-sacrifice by promoting recycling, planting gardens and buying potatoes. Still others warned that loose lips can literally sink ships and get American soldiers killed. This stash of 190 propaganda posters from World War I and World War II were found last year on top of two sawhorses in the basement of a Rochester, New Hampshire library. The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls says the page from Johann Gutenberg’s Bible printed in Germany in the mid-1450s was discovered by a museum curator during research for “Making History: The Nuremberg and Augsburg Chronicles,” an exhibition opening Sunday and running through Dec. 30. The Gutenberg Bible page was found among the extensive collection of rare books compiled by museum founder Louis Fiske Hyde. MILFORD, Conn. – Important American paintings from the 19th century through the contemporary era were available during Shannon’s semi-annual American and European Fine Art Auction, held Oct. 25, 2018 in Milford, Connecticut. Featuring 237 lots, the auction included quality examples of American Impressionism, American Coastal scenes and Modernism. The top lot in the sale was a sailing scene depicting a New York Yacht Club race by Edward Moran. The price climbed quickly as phone bidders relayed bids against the internet and the room.
