WASHINGTON (AP) – When Washington’s $500 million Museum of the Bible held its grand opening in November 2017, attended by Vice President Mike Pence, there were questions even then about the authenticity of its centerpiece collection of Dead Sea Scrolls. Now the museum has been forced to admit a painful truth: Technical analysis by a team of German scholars has revealed that at least five of the museum’s 16 scroll fragments are apparent forgeries. SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Police Department has returned several clay artifacts to Mexico after seizing them last year. The department said it was tipped off in November 2017 that the hollow clay figurines were being sold at an estate sale. Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History verified they were genuine historical artifacts called Nayarit Figures, some of them dating to before Spanish settlement. The police department returned the items during a ceremony at the Mexican consulate in Seattle on Nov. 20. Police Chief Carmen Best said the department’s Major Crimes Task Force worked over the past year with U.S. and international law enforcement officials, as well as the State Department and the Mexican consulate, to ensure the return of the figurines.…

CINCINNATI (AP) – An Ohio family says they bought the U.S. flag captured on a live camera as it was being torn to shreds by Hurricane Florence to honor the memory of a family member who recently died from cancer. Mike Caruso, of Cincinnati says his family was motivated by the tattered flag’s ordeal during the hurricane, and it also reminded him of his brother, Charlotte resident Kevin Caruso. Kevin Caruso died Sept. 30, just hours before bidding on the flag closed. PHOENIX (AP) – The deputy director of Arizona State Parks & Trails, who is under investigation over accusations the agency bulldozed over archaeological sites, once signed a federal grant application over the objections of a staff archaeologist, according to documents obtained Monday by The Arizona Republic. The report adds another layer of questions about an agency whose director, Sue Black, is facing a slew of allegations including disregarding laws protecting historical and Native American sites. Records show Deputy Director Jim Keegan filled out an application in March 2016 for funding administered through the Arizona Department of Transportation. The “Cultural Clearance Review” form notes that it must be signed by the archaeologist for agencies that have a staff archaeologist. BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) – A set of ancient mosaics that were part of an Ohio university’s art collection will be returned to Turkey, more than half a century after looters removed them from the ruins of Roman homes and smuggled them out of the country. Turkish representatives joined Bowling Green State University administrators at a news conference Nov. 27 to discuss the decision, the Toledo Blade reported . Having football coins in boxes of Salada Tea and Junket brand desserts for the 1962 football season was a surprise in that it gave collectors an extra gridiron-related set to go after, since Topps, Fleer and Post Cereal were the only card sets of any size for football fans that year. But in the spring of ’62 Salada had the same basic promotion with baseball coins, only in this case the coins were plastic with a paper insert of the big leaguer on the front. In 1963 Salada came back with baseball coins, this time made of metal, but no football coins. (AP) – Advocates for Abraham Lincoln’s museum pleaded with Illinois lawmakers Tuesday to use state funds to help keep a throng of historic artifacts in his hometown despite questions about whether one of the relics – a stovepipe hat – actually belonged to the 16th president. Lawmakers grilled Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation leaders over the $9.2 million it still owes on the loan it took in 2007 to buy a collection of as many as 1,500 Lincoln-related items from private collector Louise Taper. The note comes due in October 2019, and the foundation has said it will have to auction parts of the collection if it can’t raise the balance. One type of nutcracker that is not truly a nutcracker but included in many collections is the betel cutter, which is used to slice the areca nut for consumption. The cutter has a different design, depending on the area you find it. Traditionally, its cutting blade is iron. The hinged instrument slices the carcinogenic areca nut, which is then wrapped in a betel leaf along with lime from seashells. Some users add tobacco and spices. The mixture gives a feeling of euphoria used by many to ease anxiety and pain. Today, the young people are turning away from the practice. The cutters are made mostly for tourists. When it was announced last sprint that the location of the semi-annual Chicagoland Antique Advertising, Slot Machine and Jukebox Show would be moving to a new location, there were grumbles from many dealers. Why the move after 30-plus years? At the long time Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Ill., the show was split into two adjoining rooms, the Mega Center and the Ballroom. BERLIN (AP) – German prosecutors have indicted four young men over the brazen theft of a 221-pound Canadian gold coin from a Berlin museum. The “Big Maple Leaf” coin, worth several million dollars, was stolen from the Bode Museum in March 2017. Berlin prosecutors said Oct. 17 that they have filed charges of theft against four suspects at a juvenile court in the capital. Three men, identified only as 21-year-old Wissam R., 20-year-old Ahmed R. and 23-year-old Wayci R., are accused of stealing the coin during the night using a wheelbarrow. The fourth suspect, 20-year-old Dennis W., worked as a guard at the museum for a private security firm and is accused of scouting out the scene. Prosecutors believe that the suspects cut up the coin and sold the pieces.…

BERLIN (AP) – Three unknown men allegedly stole a painting by French impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir from an auction house in Vienna, police said Nov. 28. The thieves walked into the Dorotheum auction house on Nov. 26 and removed the painting from a wall in a room on the second floor where it was on display. They then left the building through three different exits and escaped, police said in a written statement. Police published pictures of the unknown men and asked the public for help in finding the thieves. An auction listing for the Renoir painting “Golfe, Mer, Falaises Vertes” estimated at between $136,000-$181,000, was removed from the Dorotheum’s website.…

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) – The Massachusetts museum that drew international condemnation for its decision to raise money by selling dozens of works of art, including two by Norman Rockwell, says it only needed to sell about half the pieces to reach its goal. The Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield announced Nov. 27 it only needed to sell 22 works, raising more than $53 million, even though it could have sold up to 40 pieces. The museum said there will be no further sales. Officials, citing the museum’s dire financial straits, announced in 2017 they needed to sell the works to stay open, bolster the endowment, and fund a renovation as it refocused its mission away from art and toward natural history and science. NATICK, Mass. (AP) – A World War II museum in Massachusetts is displaying artifacts commemorating the Pearl Harbor attack ahead of the Dec. 7 anniversary. The International Museum of World War II [https://museumofworldwarii.org] says it recently acquired a life ring from the USS Arizona. The battleship was among those destroyed in the surprise attack by Japan on the U.S. naval base in Hawaii that prompted the U.S. to enter the war in 1941. CLAYSVILLE, Pa. (AP) – A World War I soldier’s uniform jacket has been returned to his family in Claysville, a piece of history they never knew existed. Jay Plants of Claysville recently discovered the jacket in a suitcase that had been left on a curb on Saw Hill Road in East Finley Township for trash pickup about a year ago. Plants, who jokingly referred to himself as a “dumpster diver,” tossed the suitcase into his truck and then stored it in the loft of a building he owns. It wasn’t until earlier this year that he opened the suitcase and found the olive green, wool military jacket. ATHENS, Greece (AP) – A Greek court has given four-year suspended prison sentences to two Bulgarian women who smeared centuries-old artifacts in three Athens museums with frying oil for apparently religious reasons. Defense lawyer Maria Constantopoulou said her clients said they believed they were ridding the world of evil spirits and purifying the artifacts – all Christian-era – by anointing them with oil. HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) – Authorities say four bronze plaques taken from a World War II-era submarine in New Jersey have been recovered. The Record reports the plaques – valued at approximately $10,000 – were recently returned by a member of the Submarine Memorial Association, which maintains the USS Ling. The member said he was “safeguarding” the plaques ahead of the mid-August eviction of the New Jersey Naval Museum, and the association won’t pursue charges against him. Meanwhile, three more people have been cited in connection with vandalism that occurred last month, when someone opened hatches and deliberately flooded the sub. An association member has signed complaints accusing them of trespassing. A trespassing charge was also signed against a Connecticut man. DETROIT (AP) – A judge has ordered a Michigan man to surrender two antique lighthouse lenses worth at least $600,000, months after the collector lost a court battle with the federal government. Judge Mark Goldsmith told Steve Gronow that he doesn’t want to jail him. He set a new February deadline. Gronow didn’t object. Coast Guard offi cials went to Gronow’s mansion in Howell, 50 miles northwest of Detroit, and weren’t allowed through a gate. He was supposed to give up the lenses last summer. Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Caplan says it’s time “for the games to end.” The lenses are from the Spring Point Ledge lighthouse in Maine and the Belle Isle lighthouse in Detroit. YARMOUTH, Mass. (AP) – The man leading the exploration of a pirate ship that sank off the coast of Cape Cod 300 years ago says this year’s excavations at the site have yielded hundreds of bracelets and other artifacts. Barry Clifford, who discovered the Whydah in 1984, tells the Cape Cod Times that 600 of the bracelets known as manillas were recovered from the site before October storms put an end to this year’s efforts. He says the bracelets made of copper and bronze were once a form of currency along the West African coast and were worn by women as a display of wealth. The team also recovered a concretion containing the barrel and walnut stock of a musket that may date to the late 1600s or early 1700s.…

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) – Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying the people who damaged a lakeside wooden sculpture that was unveiled in the Adirondacks last year. The Warren County Sheriff’s Offi ce says surveillance images taken on the night of Sept. 9 show a group of people at the 24-foot sculpture depicting colonial British scout Robert Rogers and five American Indians in a canoe. The $80,000 sculpture was unveiled a year ago in September along Lake George’s southern shore. Deputies say surveillance cameras showed two men, one of them shirtless, climbing the fence surrounding the sculpture and sitting and reclining on the artwork, causing damage to parts of the carving. LONDON (AP) – A wheelchair used by physicist Stephen Hawking has sold at auction for almost 300,000 pounds ($393,000), while a copy of his doctoral thesis fetched almost 585,000 pounds ($767,000), auctioneer Christie’s said Nov. 8. The motorized chair, used by Hawking after he was paralyzed with motor neuron disease, raised 296,750 pounds ($378,850) in a Christie’s online auction. The 1962 NFL Championship Game ended much like the 1961 contest, with the Green Bay Packers beating the New York Giants. Where the ’61 battle was lopsided (37-0), the rematch, however, was quite different. The 16-7 contest took place at Yankee Stadium, with wind often around 35-40 mph and temps in the teens. One broadcaster labeled the game conditions “barbaric.” Bonfires in the dugouts helped TV crews thaw their cameras.
