Happy National Postcard Week! This year’s edition lands smack dab in the middle of it. What a happy coincidence. Q My mother had this figurine in her dining room cabinet. Is it worth anything? It is signed Bonalberti and marked on the bottom “Works of Art / Hand Sculpture / Italy / 369/.” — L.R. DesPlaines, Ill. A L.R. has sent photos of a figurine his mother kept in her cabinet. It is a Capodimonte figurine made in Italy for the tourist trade and export after World War II. Capodimonte is a soft paste porcelain developed in Italy in the 1740s and it is still made today. The “369” indicates it was that number of the total made of this figurine. Many different studios have made Capodimonte including Bruno, Benni, Pucci, and Bonalberti. It appears to be in excellent condition from the photos sent and should sell for $200…

LONDON - Artist records were broken at Lyon & Turnbull’s inaugural MODERN MADE auction in London on March 27. The innovative sale of 270 lots of British and international post-war art, sculpture, design and ceramics held at the Mall Galleries, SW1, received plaudits from the dealing and collecting community as it posted a total of £1 million ($1,308,100), including premium. YORK, Pa. – Fresh-to-market original comic book art spurred a fan frenzy at Hake’s March 13-14 auction and produced a $1.26 million result, with new auction records set by several prize entries. Predicted to finish well in the money, Rob Liefeld’s original pen-and-ink art for Page 27 of New Mutants #98, published by Marvel in February 1991, did not disappoint. Search for an artist: • Fascinating article about the search for an artist. I had an old painting of a harbor similar to a master’s style that my mom had picked up at the thrift shop. WESTPORT, Conn. – Anyone looking to start, add to or complete their collection of signers of the Declaration of Independence will have that opportunity in University Archives’ next online-only auction, set for Wednesday, May 15, starting at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time. Enthusiastic bidding was seen across all sections of the sale, resulting in seven records, with significant interest from institutions. A 1958 edition of The Negro Travelers’ Green Book by Victor H. Green broke a record for any edition of the publication at $27,500. The Anglo-Boer War in 100 Objects, compiled by the War Museum of the Boer Republics in South Africa (Frontline Books, an imprint of Pen & Sword, 2017) is a compact but power-packed glimpse of seldom-seen artifacts. Tokkie Pretorius, director of the War Museum of the Boer Republics, in the foreword says this book presents 100 main artifacts from the Museum’s collections, in addition to 216 secondary objects. In a nutshell, this book “was compiled only to present an overview of salient wartime objects but also to serve as a valuable source of information for local and international collectors, alike.” The War Museum of the Boer Republics is the world’s only museum dedicated to the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), which is also known as the South African War. WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation has recently added several important objects of Judaica to its collections: a sterling silver and gold Kiddush cup and a silver and gold yad (or Torah pointer). These mark the first such objects in the Foundation’s holdings and exemplify the concerted efforts in recent years by the curators to acquire objects and address the stories of all early Americans while remaining true to their longstanding strength in British and American decorative arts. Additionally, objects that represent the early Anglo-American experience have also been acquired.
