WOBURN, Mass. (AP) – The owner of a Massachusetts auto auction where five people were killed when a vehicle driven by an unlicensed driver plowed into a crowd pleaded not guilty to five counts of manslaughter. James Lamb, 67, owner of the Lynnway Auto Auction in Billerica, was released on personal recognizance after his brief arraignment in Middlesex Superior Court. Two people died at the scene when the Jeep Grand Cherokee accelerated into a crowd in May 2017 and crashed through a cinder block wall, and three died in the following days. Seven were injured. The driver, 76 at the time, had his license suspended in 2012. He was not charged because he was not on a public road and prosecutors said they could not prove that he acted recklessly.…

For most of the last twenty years, the online review process has been a real free-for-all. Once businesses realized that their reputations were pinned to social proof (online reviews and testimonials) and consumers realized that reviews gave them a powerful bargaining chip, the process became bent. MOSCOW (AP) – A court in Moscow on April 30 sentenced a Russian man to 2-1/2 years in prison for vandalizing a famous painting by the renowned Russian artist Ilya Repin. The court found Igor Podporin guilty of damaging the painting, which depicts Russian czar Ivan the Terrible cradling his dying son after striking him in a fit of rage. Podporin attacked the iconic “Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan on November 16, 1581” with a metal stanchion at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow in May last year. He claimed that he damaged one of the gallery’s most famous exhibits because he thinks it’s historically inaccurate. (AP) – Passing by a display case in the Senior Community Center lobby, local residents might recognize relics of a bygone era when a dollar and change could pay for an entire restaurant meal. A variety of menus, ash trays, glassware and silverware from several now-defunct area restaurants are among dozens of items on display in the Senior Center, 331 High St., thanks to local collector Jeff Alcorn, who began accumulating the items more than 50 years ago. QI have this piece that’s mark 21 April 1865 and I’m trying to figure out what it is. Can you help me? — W.M. AW. M. has sent photos of an item he wants identified. The item is an epergne with two lavender glass inserts. It has a foliate design and probably was silver plate when new in 1865. These were used as center pieces on the table and could be used to hold sweetmeats, flowers, etc., as part of the decoration for a meal. The date and inscription indicate this epergne was a gift or had a special significance at the time. PITTSBURGH (AP) – A 17th century Geneva Bible, one of the hundreds of rare books authorities said were stolen from a Pittsburgh library as part of a 20-year-long theft scheme, is back home. The Bible, published in 1615, was traced to the American Pilgrim Museum in Leiden, about 45 miles from Amsterdam in the Netherlands, said FBI agent Robert Jones. It was among more than 300 rare books, maps, plate books, atlases and more that were discovered missing from the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh last year. A former archivist at the library and a rare book dealer are accused of stealing books valued at more than $8 million. ETNA, Pa. (AP) – A blaze at a sprawling storage facility in Pennsylvania destroyed at least 75 antique and classic cars and motorcycles. Etna Fire Chief Greg Porter says the fire broke out May 8 at the large commercial building a few miles north of Pittsburgh. A number of small businesses also rent space in the facility, including Lab Ratz, which brings animals to schools as a science education program. The owner says he’s not sure what happened to the snakes, lizards and turtles inside. Three firefighters were sent to hospitals with minor injuries. Porter says it appears someone was working on a motorcycle and it caught fire, sparking the blaze.
