Greetings! Antique Trader has reached its mid-year break, so we’ve gone through great efforts to fill this edition with enough information to keep you busy until our next edition arrives in early August. Starting out in this issue, just after the “Columns Section,” you’ll find an enjoyable “collecting autobiography” by subscriber Bob Collins. Bob started his collecting journey by collecting stamps as a child. Through the decades, you’ll find his focus has become more narrow. I learned a great deal from Bob’s “letter”; I believe you will find it a satisfying read, and may just experience a chuckle or two. (It begins on page 16.) Antique dealers are proud of their inventories, and for good reason. They travel far afield searching for new and interesting items to offer for sale: they rummage through estate sales, walk for miles through large outdoor events, and scan online auctions for hours, picking and curating their merchandise. Retail customers are delighted by an abundance of choice. They ramble through antique shops “oohing” and “ahhing” (making it clear to sales associate that they are “just looking”). When they are done browsing, many walk out without buying anything. Their reasons for not buying are endless, but one well-researched theory proposes that large, diverse inventories can inhibit buying. Antique malls are a good example of such inventories: shoppers encounter dozens of haphazardly arranged booths filled with randomly displayed merchandise. Who could make…

It’s not everyday a woman’s fashion accessory gets to pull double duty as a weapon, but according to advertisements in noted magazines such as Harpers Weekly, from the late 1890s to about 1920 that’s exactly how some manufacturers advertised their hatpins. Be stylish and safe, too! According to the American Hatpin Society, hatpins have been around since the 1400s, when women wore complex headdresses called wimples to cover and hold their hair in place. These were notably worn and used by the aristocracy, as the common lady had no need of such a complicated item of clothing. Pins were used to hold the wimples in place. By the early 1800s, pins of all kinds were in demand, not just for wimples, which had gone out of fashion, but other accessories…

NEW YORK – Christie’s announces One Giant Leap: Celebrating Space Exploration 50 Years After Apollo 11, which includes nearly 200 artifacts from NASA missions of the Sixties and Seventies including the Gemini and Apollo programs. The sale’s highlight is the Apollo 11 Lunar Module Timeline Book (estimate: $7-$9 million), which was used by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to navigate the lunar module Eagle onto the surface of the moon in July 1969. The Book includes traces of moon dust and almost 150 handwritten annotations including Lunar Module Eagle’s coordinates on the lunar surface within moments of landing, marking the first writing by a human being on an extraterrestrial body. FRANKLIN, Ind. (AP) – A central Indiana county that was once a powerhouse in the canning industry is taking a look back at those days in a new exhibit. Johnson County was Indiana’s top producer of canned goods during the early 20th century. The county just south of Indianapolis boasted an array of canning plants that produced more than 53 million cans of food in 1942 alone. The new exhibit examining that industry is called “Pick, Peel, Preserve: Canning in Johnson County” and runs through mid-October at the Johnson County Museum of History. Director David Pfeiffer tells the Daily Journal that the canning industry helped “put Johnson County on the map.” The county’s J.T. Polk Canning Co. started in a Greenwood kitchen in 1872 and grew to become the largest…

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A federal judge has temporarily blocked a Tennessee law that requires online auctioneers to be licensed but exempts some big auction websites like eBay. U.S. District Judge Eli Richardson filed the temporary restraining order in late June before the law would kick in July 1. The law remains blocked until July 11, pending additional orders. Richardson questioned creating numerous exemptions if the state has such a substantial interest in preventing deceptive online auctions. Previously, Attorney General Herbert Slatery argued in a filing that the plaintiffs’ arguments would make all auctioneering unable to be regulated. He wrote that nothing in the law indicates it’s meant to require state licensing of auctioneers not located in Tennessee. The Beacon Center of Tennessee filed the lawsuit for two online auctioneer…

NEW YORK (AP) — The wife of the artist Peter Max has died in a suspected suicide amid a family fight over her husband’s work and allegations that he was being exploited. New York City Police say Mary Max, 52, was found dead Sunday in her apartment by her husband’s health aide. She had been married since 1997 to Peter Max, whose psychedelic, colorful artworks have sold well since the 1960s. The New York Times published a story two weeks ago detailing legal battles over the work of Peter Max, a prolific creator of art now living with dementia at age 81. In lawsuits and interviews, some family members claimed Peter Max was being mistreated and asked to sign his name to work created by a team of other artists.…

BARODA, Mich. (AP) – Ted Muellen was 12 years old when he and his mother opened Shawnee Road Antiques in Baroda. Muellen, owner of the antique store, is now 62 as his shop turned 50 years old over Memorial Day weekend. The shop has grown in size over the years. The operation began with one building. However, the shop now has three to its name. What is now the main shop was built in 1972. A former workroom and storage area was turned into a clothing area about two decades ago, which is run by Muellen’s girlfriend, Marsha Ruby. ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — Officials in the Illinois city home to the women’s baseball team that inspired the 1992 film “A League of Their Own” want to help fund a $7 million museum honoring the role of women in the sport’s history. The city of Rockford’s planning committee agreed recently to provide $20,000 to help kick off construction of the International Women’s Baseball Center. The City Council will likely vote on the plan, the Rockford Register Star reported. The museum, hall of fame and training facility will be located near the stadium where the Rockford Peaches played in the 1940s and 1950s as part of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. This mark has been used by manufacturers in the UK and in Europe as a foundry mark. On June 13, 2006 a great American furniture legend ceased to exist – again. It was the second exit of the maker of Hitchcock chairs, an industry leader and innovator in both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The first incarnation began in 1814 when 19-year-old Lambert Hitchcock of Chesire, Connecticut was apprenticed to Silas Cheney (1776-1821) of Litchfield as a novice woodworker. Cheney was the typical cabinetmaker of the period turning out well made examples of Federal sideboards and fancy painted chairs that caught young Hitchcock’s attention. While apprenticed to Cheney he became familiar with the work of Eli Terry, the famous clock maker and inventor. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Dallas-based law firm placed the winning $1.435 million bid for a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee that the city put in an online auction almost two years after removing it from a state park. Holmes Firm PC made the top offer for the bronze sculpture, according to documents from the Dallas City Council. It was among several Lee monuments around the U.S. that were removed from public view amid the fallout over racial violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017. The firm, owned by Ronald L. MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Edward Hopper’s final painting is on view at the Currier Museum of Art. “Two Comedians,” showing the artist and his wife taking a bow onstage, once belonged to singer Frank Sinatra. Hopper painted the work in 1966 at age 83, when he and his wife were seriously ill. He died the following year. Museum curator Kurt Sundstrom said it is a somber reflection of two people alone on a dark stage. JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) – An elk antler auction held May 18 in Wyoming raised money for a wildlife refuge and the Boy Scouts. The annual auction in Jackson brought in over $186,000 from the sale of more than 10,000 pounds of antlers. Male elk naturally drop their antlers each year. Local scouts gathered hundreds of antlers shed on the National Elk Refuge. Bidders paid an average of almost $17 per pound for antlers this year. That’s down from last year’s average but well above the 10-year average. Refuge officials say local scouts keep 25% of the proceeds and 75% goes to the refuge for wildlife habitat projects.…

BERLIN (AP) — Germany says it will return to Italy a painting by Dutch artist Jan van Huysum that was stolen by Nazi troops during World War II. The government said in a statement June 29 that Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and his Italian counterpart Enzo Moavero will travel to Florence soon to hand the still-life “Vase of Flowers” back to the Uffizi Gallery. Its director, Eike Schmidt, had made a public appeal for the return of the painting earlier this year. The oil painting had been part of the Pitti Palace collection in Florence from 1824 until the outbreak of World War II. NEW YORK (AP) — The 275-year-old auction house Sotheby’s is being sold to a French Israeli businessman for about $3.7 billion. Sotheby’s, founded in London in 1744, is the oldest company traded on the New York Stock Exchange. If the deal is approved by shareholders and regulators, Sotheby’s would become a privately held company for the first time in more than three decades. The New York company, which started in London, holds auctions in 10 sales-rooms worldwide with annual sales turnover exceeding $4 billion. HONOLULU (AP) – A section of the USS Missouri is being repaired as part of a $3 million restoration project to address rust and other deterioration on the Pearl Harbor memorial ahead of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. The 887-foot Missouri was the site of Japan’s unconditional surrender on Sept. 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports Monday that the battleship will undergo repairs to its aft superstructure that are expected to be completed in August. Last year, a $3.5 million renovation was done on the tallest portion of the superstructure. THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) — Police in central Greece have arrested a man suspected of dealing in illegally excavated antiquities who had allegedly placed an advert to sell ancient coins on a Greek website for second-hand items. In a statement June 7, police said a search of the 45-year-old Greek suspect’s home uncovered 28 copper coins from ancient Greek and mediaeval times. Officers also found more than two dozen other antique objects including bronze fragments of jewelry, lead seals and old bullets. The investigation, conducted by the electronic crimes squad, followed publication of the online advert. The suspect was arrested in a village near the city of Larissa. Greece is rich in buried antiquities, but all artefacts found are considered state property and their unauthorized possession and sale is illegal.…
