GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Stuhr Museum will soon be able to share a piece of history thanks to a recent discovery. Kari Stofer, museum curator, said the museum was invited by George Bartenbach to look through the former Bartenbach’s Gallery building and they located a U.S. flag with 38 stars on it. The flag is 8 and a half feet by 16 and a half feet in size. Stofer said she is not aware of any other places that have a 38-star flag in Nebraska. That flag was only around for about 11 years before more states entered the union and a new flag was made. “It was very exciting; it is like discovering a treasure,” Stofer told The Grand Island Independent. “We all shared it, talked about it…

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – A South Dakota man has scrapped plans to open a museum honoring recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor. John L. Johnson of Rapid City had planned to open the museum Aug. 1 at the Rushmore Mall. But Johnson told the Rapid City Journal recently that he has abandoned that plan after receiving threats. Instead, he says he plans to open an art gallery for Native American artists on that date in the same space planned for the museum. Johnson sparked controversy in an interview with the newspaper, when he referred to efforts to rescind medals given to U.S. cavalry soldiers for the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre that killed Native Americans, including women and children. RENO, Nev. – Out of more than 4,000 lots in various collecting categories, a wire gold specimen pulled from the Ibex Mine in Leadville, Colorado, won the day after selling for $11,250 at a recent Holabird Western Americana auction. Another top seller was a Hawaii Baseball Association stock certificate issued to baseball inventor A.J. Cartwright in 1890 that brought in $4,500. The certificate was issued on June 12th, 1890, for five shares, and Cartwright signed the reverse. MACKINAW CITY, Mich. — The Mackinaw City Women’s Club celebrated its 50th Annual Antiques Show recently. SPARKS, MD – A striking American ware face cooler has set two world records after selling for $177,000 —more than $50,000 above its high estimate. The 25-inch 20-gallon salt-glazed cooler broke auction records at Crocker Farm on July 20 for the highest price achieved for any American face vessel, and for any piece of Ohio stoneware. The rare and important piece had been estimated to sell between $75,000-$125,000. NEW YORK (AP) — An auction of David Gilmour’s guitars has raised a lot of “Money” — to combat climate change. One guitar also set a new world record. Christie’s auction house says it raised $21.5 million June 20, selling off more than 120 guitars owned by the Pink Floyd guitarist, singer and songwriter. Proceeds went to ClientEarth, a nonprofit fighting climate change. The items included guitars by Fender, Rickenbacker, Ovation, Gibson, C.F. HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – The Philadelphia Museum of Art will be loaning works to eight Pennsylvania museums under a new program designed to broaden public access to art. The museum announced the program in the state Capitol, saying the eight participating museums have selected works they’ll be loaned during the project’s first phase. The participants are the Allentown Art Museum, the Demuth Foundation in Lancaster, the Erie Art Museum, the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, the Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State, the Reading Public Museum, the Trout Gallery in Carlisle and the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg. BAKER, Nev. (AP) – A 137-year-old rifle found five years ago leaning against a juniper tree in Great Basin National Park in Nevada is now part of an exhibit dedicated to the “Forgotten Winchester” at the park visitor center near the Utah border. The weathered Winchester Model 1873 is in a case designed to capture the way it looked when park archaeologist Eva Jensen stumbled across it on a rocky outcrop above Strawberry Creek during an archaeological survey. Based on its condition, experts believe the weapon might have been abandoned in the forest more than a century ago. LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Los Angeles says admission will soon be free thanks to a $10 million gift by the president of its board of trustees. Carolyn Powers announced her donation during an annual benefit dinner. The Los Angeles Times says about 700 guests, many of them artists, leapt to their feet and applauded when Powers broke the news. A prototype Star Wars action figure caused a stir recently when it sold for more than $110,000 at auction, but a leading toy expert says astute action figure collectors could see this coming from a galaxy far, far away. “First, the toy was never released so there are very few in existence, maybe 10-15 total.
