DALLAS – A bronze by Frederic Remington grabbed top lot, and Golden Age illustration art set multiple records at a recent Heritage Auctions’ sale. Multiple bidders drove Remington’s The Bronco Buster to a final selling price of $615,000. The rare 1.5-scale work is one of just 19 casts made from a large-scale plaster model of his iconic sculpture; others can be found in collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Fort Worth’s Amon Carter Museum and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. Five records were set to help drive the final total for Heritage’s American Auction to $5.3 million. Very early on, civilized man placed great value on adorning the walls of his home. The Greeks and Romans used reliefs sculpted from marble and stone. That followed with marbled veneers and glazed tiles. Different treatments and colors of stucco were later employed to decorate one’s walls. Stamped leather from Spain became the rage, and painted cloths and tapestries were quite the fashion in wall hangings. What followed was the development of wallpaper, which was a natural step in the evolution of interior decorating. The same wood printing blocks used for textiles could now be used in creating wallpaper. The application of wallpapers has been enjoyed all those years since, and to today. DALLAS – Continuing a recent noteworthy trend, outstanding artworks by women are the featured lots of Heritage Auctions’ Fine European Art Auction on Dec. 6. Leading the group is Anne Red-path’s highly expressive Still life with daffodils and tulips (estimate: $30,000-$40,000). Redpath was a major figure of the Edinburgh School, who forged a successful career painting intimate interior spaces, depictions of rural life that have a primitive quality and floral arrangements. The sale was part of Julien’s recent “Legendary Women of Hollywood” auction, which included an extravaganza of other memorabilia and rarities from the Golden Age of Hollywood to today’s modern legends, as well as a selection of never-before-seen auction firsts.
