ROAD TRIP! Arguably the two most optimistic and exciting words ever spoken. You. Me. A full tank of gas and the open road. Toss in a few snacks and toss out the maps and off we go. One Saturday last January while Don Creekmore was in his Wichita, Kansas, home, he started getting text messages from an unknown phone number in Wisconsin. Odd. There were no words. No explanations. All that was popping up were drop-the-phone, catch-your-breath, mind-boggling pictures. “Only once in your hunting career do you find something like this,” says Creekmore, an authority on antique diving helmets who, with his wife, Jenny, runs Nation’s Attic, a Wichita business specializing in buying and selling of antique diving gear. The object of Creekmore’s wonder is a US Navy Mark V diving helmet made in 1916 by A.J. Morse & Son Inc., Boston, believed to be the earliest such helmet to exist. Because many of its members are in the high-risk category for COVID-19, the National Association of Aladdin Lamp Collectors has canceled its 31st annual International Lamp Show in Louisville. The event was scheduled for August 14-15 at the Crowne Plaza Airport Expo Center and will now be in 2021. “Our top concern is safety and health of members of all lighting clubs. We have much concern over the virus pandemic, airplane flights, international attendees and economic factors. The NAALC voted to cancel in the best interests of everyone concerned,” the group said. Ron and Vicki Jenkins, the General Knights (hosts), planned and organized the gathering events and are thanked for all their hard work. They will look to next year for better days. Dear Antique Trader, I enjoyed the “Postcard Passion” issue (May 6, 2020) of Antique Trader. I have thousands of cards I enjoy “playing with – especially those with written messages. I have several interesting stories connected with them but that’s not my goal today. Instead, a subject I’ve thought a lot about is early examples of postcard pornography. Years ago I would find large caches of early postcards at yard sales, etc. for almost nothing. I would sometimes find among the mix graphic art or photos of female pornography. Some had very explicit verses with a comical theme. These were regular postcards – most having been sent through the post office with a written message such as “Will see you on Sunday, Aunt Myrtle” or “Grandma. Are you feeling better…

NEW YORK CITY — A bronze sculpture by a noted African American artist recently set an auction record for his work at Swann Auction Galleries. Artist Richmond Barthé (1901-1989) set the record at Swann Galleries’ African-American Fine Art sale on June 4 when his bronze sculpture “Feral Benga” sold for $629,000 on a $60,000 high estimate. The result for “Feral Benga” was seven times higher than Barthe’s previous record of $87,500 for his bronze sculpture, “The Awakening of Africa,” which was also set at Swann Galleries in October 2017. It was also the highest price for a sculpture sold in an African-American art sale by the firm. The history of door knockers is sketchy at best, but one of the earliest may be traced back to the time before Christ. It was unearthed in the town of Olynthos, located in ancient Macedonia, and is thought to have dated to around 400 B.C. Other reference is made to them throughout the centuries. The classic ring door knocker is one of the first styles introduced, and there is a tale that goes along with its use. This type of door knocker decorated the entranceways on churches and cathedrals during medieval times. These rings were used as a measure to help those who needed to gain sanctuary.
