Considering the ongoing battle with the coronavirus pandemic, it comes as little surprise that the September 8-13 Brimfield (Massachusetts) Antique Flea Market has been cancelled. “We are very sorry to announce that due to circumstances beyond our control, the Brimfield Flea Markets will be closed” for the September event, Brimfield organizers posted on their website. “We will post updates for all future events as they become available. Please stay safe and healthy.” Brimfield set the following dates for its three events in 2021: May 11-16; July 13-18; and September 7-12. The Stickley name is perhaps one the most famous and widely respected family names in the history of American furniture. And the most widely recognized of the five Stickley brothers was the oldest brother Gustav. Years ago, I filled this space with the postulation that Gustav (1858-1942) was ultimately responsible for the “American Look” in twentieth century furniture. While Gustav was quite famous in the span of his brief career and is even more revered today in auction halls across the country, how many pieces of Gustav’s work have you actually seen with your own eyes? It seems there is a lot of talk about “selling a collection” these days. Whether it is the uncertain economy, life adjustments or simply a change in interests, the fact is, many collectors are divesting themselves of years of accumulation. I am one of those collectors, having sold two collections during the past two years. DALLAS – In 1970, acclaimed sci-fi and fantasy illustrator Frank Frazetta painted two versions of the cover for Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess of Mars. One he sent to the publishing house Doubleday, whose hardback version of the 1912 story – featuring the debuts of Confederate soldier John Carter and Martian princess Dejah Thoris – has become one of the most recognizable and influential covers in publishing history. And the other Frazetta made for himself immediately upon completion of the assignment. Frazetta was deeply proud of the piece and knew its return was unlikely. If you have rare vintage items, “American Pickers” might just want to talk with you. Looking to showcase the rarest vintages items from around the country on its twenty-second season, “American Pickers,” a television show dedicated to Americana artifacts and antiques on the History Channel, is calling upon interesting characters with interesting items to submit a description of their collections for a chance to appear on the show. The cast of “American Pickers” will be following all guidelines and protocols for safe filming as outlined by each state, and may opt to reschedule filming dates as new developments are announced concerning the coronavirus pandemic. MY DAD ALWAYS HAD a big car. It made sense: there were seven of us to haul around. So my childhood was filled with huge, exotic-sounding vehicles: a Plymouth De Luxe, a Chevy Biscayne, and a Pontiac Bonneville. There was also a blue Ford station wagon among the fleet. Not too exotic sounding, sure, but substantial nonetheless. The cars of my youth were titanic, built to cruise with maximum capacity. One time the Old Man showed up with a yellow Volkswagen Rabbit. HARRISBURG, Penn. – A 1921 Babe Ruth baseball card issued by the American Caramel Company was the top lot at Cordier Auctions’ August 15 sale when it sold for $51,600. The black and white card was from the American Caramel Baseball Players E121 series and was PSA graded 7. Cordier Auctions’ catalog specialist Melanie Hartman said this was the highest card of this version graded that high. The card was also notable in that it had a defect. The card shows Ruth in his throw follow-through during his time with the New York Yankees, written on the card as the “New York Americans” as all teams in the American League were dubbed at the time.
