FLY CREEK, NY – A recent fire ripped through a barn that served as a storage location for an antiques business, destroying the inventory. The blaze destroyed Wood Bull Antiques owner Kip Coburn’s barn, which had been the original storage location for his inventory when he moved to the area from New York City 40 years ago. The barn was packed full of antiques, adding fuel to the blaze. “There was some natural wood furniture in there and a lot of spare chairs,” said Coburn. “I’m a bit of a packrat when it comes to collecting.” Also inside were two camping trailers and several antique cars, all of which were destroyed. “I don’t know how the fire started,” he said. “But when I got there, the whole side was on…

Multiple telephone and online bidders pushed Fritz Scholder’s Indian Messiah, above, to a new world record after it sold for $187,500 at a recent sale at Hindman Auctions. The final result for the oil on canvas from 1975 was almost 10 times its presale estimate of $20,000-$30,000. A number of other world auction records were also set including one by Scholder’s contemporary and friend, Earl Biss, when his 1986 oil on canvas, Ritual Dance of the Moon Hunters, realized $75,000 against a presale estimate of $15,000-$25,000. Scholder and Biss are most famous for their Native American imagery and the market for these artists, as well as the Western art market in general, continues to flourish, said Hindman’s.
