But while the brakes were put on live sales, for auction houses that quickly pivoted online, virtual sales exploded and were full speed ahead. Auction houses proved to be as resilient and innovative as ever, bringing forward new ways to hold auctions, while remaining consistent in delivering quality works to the auction block. WE ARE IN THE MIDST of a brutal stretch of winter in Wisconsin. For the past two weeks, temperatures have dropped well below zero. When German immigrants left their homeland to make the treacherous journey across the Atlantic to America in the early 18th century, the precious cargo many took with them were their iron stoves. The Germans, who settled in Pennsylvania, used jamb stoves with ornamental stove plates that were ornately engraved with historic lore and low relief designs that often included secular mottoes, biblical inscriptions, human characters and pictorial designs. They looked upon these iron stoves as an essential component to their daily living. These stoves were also a valuable commodity. Toucans live in the treetops of Central and South America, not in the open hillside of Ireland. So why does Guinness use the bird to represent a uniquely Irish beer?
