DALLAS – Joseph Christian Leyendecker’s Beat-up Boy, Football Hero became an auction hero at Heritage on May 7 when it shattered a previous world record by the artist after a bidding war. The painting, which appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post on Nov. 21, 1914, sold for $4.12 million, shattering the previous record for a Leyendecker original set in December, when Sotheby’s sold his 1930 work Carousel Ride for $516,100. DALLAS – The first dollar coin struck at the fledgling U.S. Mint in 1794, an experiment in copper which would become the pattern for more valuable silver versions minted later, recently sold for $840,000 at Heritage Auctions. Referred to as the “No Stars Flowing Hair Dollar,” it opened at $312,000 when it was put up during a live auction and in less than a minute, intense bidding quickly pushed the coin beyond pre-sale expectations of $350,000-$500,000. The 230-year-old dollar has been off the market for 20 years, residing in the private collection of Bob R. Simpson, part-owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team and a lifelong Texas energy executive. One of America’s favorite sweets — the doughnut — has a surprisingly heroic history. Although invented in the 1800s, doughnuts weren’t popularized until World War I, when some brave women took on the mission of making and delivering the baked goods to soldiers on the front lines overseas. National Doughnut Day, celebrated the first Friday of each June (June 4 this year) since 1938, was established by the Salvation Army to honor these heroines, affectionately known as Donut Lassies. Later known as Donut Dollies, they delivered the homemade treats to soldiers through the Vietnam War. In 1933 Everett Worthington of Chicago was issued design patent No. 90,744 for a beverage-dispensing device that he assigned to the Coca-Cola Co. of Atlanta. Until then, if you ordered a Coke at a soda fountain, your server pumped syrup into a glass and topped it off with cold seltzer. Although Coca-Cola distributed glassware that showed how much syrup to use, the process still tended to make the drink vary widely from place to place, both in flavor and temperature. That all changed at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair Century of Progress Exposition when Coca-Cola introduced the first automatic fountain dispenser, which created a well-blended Coke with the pull of a handle. HUNTINGBURG, Ind. — A member auction, show and sale, informative displays and exhibits and the unveiling of a special commemorative are among the planned events for the Uhl Collectors Society’s 36th annual gathering June 25-26. The gathering, at the Huntingburg Events Center, will also feature a dinner and for the eighth consecutive year, college scholarships will be awarded to members and their children or grandchildren. Despite the pandemic, last year’s gathering was a big (and safe) success and for this year’s event, all applicable COVID-19 measures will continue to be followed.
