SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A rare, light lime-green Dr. Renz’s Herb Bitters bottle, part of the renowned Mel Hammer bottle collection, sold for $24,150 at auction in December during an online event by American Bottle Auctions. The Mel Hammer collection is an incredible hoard gathered over a 50-year span by a man who dedicated much of his adult life to the acquisition and study of antique glass. Divided into two auctions, Part 1 featured many of Hammer’s favorites, such as schnapps and gin bottles, bitters bottles and inkwells, many boasting 9.5 grades. Part 2 will be held in March. Hammer died on Thanksgiving Day. The Dr. Renz’s Herb Bitters, manufactured in San Francisco, circa 1868-1881, was easily the top lot in the 137-bottle auction, establishing a new auction record. T. Mark Taylor, artist and toy designer for the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe franchise as well as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, died December 23 at his Southern California home. He was 80. He-man was the muscled leader for toy manufacturer Mattel’s Masters of the Universe franchise, which would later spawn an animated TV series in 1983, becoming a staple for kids squeezing in homework between He-Man’s battles with his nemesis Skeletor. The series cemented the popularity of the strapping cartoon hero as he battled sorcerers and other villains. As in the case of many creative endeavors, many hands shaped the franchise.
