People should have some say over the results that pop up when they conduct a search of their own name online, Europe’s highest court said Tuesday. In a landmark decision, The Court of Justice of the European Union said Google must listen and sometimes comply when individuals ask the Internet search giant to remove links to newspaper articles or websites containing their personal information. Campaigners say the ruling effectively backs individual privacy rights over the freedom of information. In an advisory judgment that will impact on all search engines, including Yahoo and Microsoft’s Bing, the court said a search on a person’s name yields a results page that amounts to an ^dividual profile. Nissan Bahar and Franky Imbesi aim to combat the lack of access to computers by providing what amounts to an operating system-on-a-stick. In six weeks, their idea managed to raise more than $40,000 (￡23,750) on fundraising site Indiegogo, providing the cash to begin a campaign to offer low-cost computing to the two-thirds of the globe s population that currently has little or no access. Samsung Electronics Co. apologized and promised compensation to chip factory workers who suffered cancers linked to chemical exposure, a rare win for families and activists seven years after the death of a 23-year-old employee from leukemia galvanized a movement to hold the company to account. Samsung said the apology does not mean it concedes a link between the chemicals used in its chip factories and cancer and other diseases. Still, the company’s statement Wednesday that it should have sought a solution sooner is an abrupt shift in Samsung’s stance and a form of vindication for workers and their families. Comcast Corp is giving at least two Asian cellular operators access to its WiFi hot spots in the United States, in trial partnerships that illustrate the cable company’s ambitions to compete with U.S. wireless carriers The deals with Japan’s KDDI Corp and Taiwan Mobile Co Ltd allow their subscribers to use Comcast’s WiFi hot spots when they travel to the United States, reducing the international roaming charges that they would otherwise have to pay, according to a Comcast spokesman. Sony Corp. sank to a 138 billion yen ($1.3 billion) quarterly loss, hit by costs from selling its personal computer business, and is forecasting more red ink as it struggles to execute a long-promised turnaround. Two robotics experts, Prof Ronald Arkin and Prof Noel Sharkey, will debate the efficacy and necessity of killer robots. The meeting will be held during the UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW). A report on the discussion will be presented to the CCW meeting in November. This will be the first time that the issue of killer robots, or lethal autonomous weapons systems, will be addressed within the CCW. The Kinect-less version of the Xbox One game console will be available worldwide from 9 June. Unbundling the Kinect will cut the US price of the console to $399. In the UK it will be ￡350, the same price as Sony’s PlayStation 4. Microsoft said it made the decision to unbundle the Kinect to give gamers “more options”. Yahoo is buying the mobile messaging app Blink. Terms of the deal, which was announced Wednesday on Blink’s website, are not being disclosed. Messages sent through the Blink app self-destruct after a certain amount of time. The app allows users to send texts, sketches, record audio, make videos and take photos. Its main rival is Snapchat, which Facebook reportedly tried to buy for $3 billion. Blink said it will shut down both the iOS and Android versions of the app in the coming weeks before the switchover. The move comes amid both Yahoo’s continued efforts to reinvent itself and rising interest from social networking companies in mobile messaging apps.
