Motorola is working on a sophisticated smartphone to compete with devices like Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy III S, The Wall Street Journal is reporting!! Sources familiar with the effort told the Journal that Motorola, acquired this year by Google for $12.5 billion, is working on a device known internally as the “X phone” to stand above existing phones. Thirty years ago a woman was teaching me the profession of computer typesetting. I was a young adult and thinking of changing “what I wanted to be when I grew up.” Being a computer typesetter seemed a lot more fun at that time than teaching English. BRUSSELS - The European Union’s executive arm, the Commission, has informed Samsung of its preliminary view that the company’s seeking of injunctions against Apple for allegedly infringing “standard-essential” patents in the EU amounts to an abuse of a dominant position. According to industry agreements, companies owning the rights to essential phone technology must usually license it to competitors on what are called fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory terms. Joaquin Almunia, the EU’s competition commissioner, said Friday, “Intellectual property rights are an important cornerstone of the single market. By the time I finally had the iPhone 5 in my hands, I felt like I already had a deep-rooted relationship with it. It was such a long wait for many reasons. Yet even after the long wait, I’m not regretting any of it. It’s all been worth it so far. For me, it’s just not cost-effective to break a contract to get a new iPhone, so I replace them at a minimum of every two years. This last wait though was actually three years because I had an unfortunate time with the 3GS and had to replace it after eleven months due to water damage. Dec. 19-The Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday announced a set of broad new rules aimed at protecting children’s privacy when they visit websites or use mobile Internet applications, after making some modifications based on objections from leading tech and entertainment companies. The new rules would require those businesses to obtain parental consent before collecting photos, videos or location information from children younger than 13. It applies the same rule to using cookies or other digital codes to track the online activity of children under 13, even if the services don’t know the child’s name. In a decision that will undoubtedly indelibly change patent and intellectual property law, a jury in San Jose, California late last week awarded Apple Inc. $1.05 billion from its yearlong legal battle with Samsung.
