AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) announced today that it sold more than 10 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2012, topping its previous record quarter of 9.4 million, set in the fourth quarter of 2011. This included best-ever quarterly sales of Android and Apple smartphones. “We had another incredible quarter of smartphone sales as the mobile Internet continues to drive strong growth in wireless,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and chief executive officer for AT&T Mobility. "These are the industry’s most valuable postpaid subscribers with average revenues twice that of non-smartphone subscribers. Many rumors are pointing towards Microsoft releasing its newest xBox console with a completely integrated Kinect eye, built right into the system itself. The Kinect is currently a standalone peripheral that can be placed on any hard surface or attached to the top of your LCD TV with a special clip. For anyone unfamiliar, the Kinect hooks into the xBox 360, and acts as a motion tracking camera. When paired with specially-developed games and software, the Kinect offers a completely controller-free experience, allowing you to literally “live the game.” This technology has created a scenario where both the Nintendo Wii and Playstation Move (which both use physical motion-tracking controllers that you must hold when gaming) are pretty much obsolete. Jan. 07--General Motors and Ford touted plans to open their vehicle infotainment technology to outside software developers so drivers can customize applications for their vehicles. Ford’s announcement was Monday. GM is to follow today at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. They are following a path blazed by Apple, which allows independent software developers to create apps for its iPhones and iPads. Facebook also allows outside developers to make apps for its social network. Unlike Apple, however, which keeps 30% of revenue users pay for certain apps while the developers keep 70%, it’s unclear how and whether the automakers will generate revenue from their new software. They know their two-year-old Internet search engine won't ever supplant Google as the most popular place to search on laptop and desktop computers. Apple’s .Phone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones have provided LTE-enabled handset shipments a substantial lift in 2012 -- even if it has not necessarily assisted the 4G mobile operators with “each and every” LTE handset sold. When 3G handsets came into the market in 2003 and 2004, there was pretty much a 1:1 correlation between a 3G handset sold and a subscription upgraded from 2G to 3G. “That is not happening with every LTE handset sale,” said Jake Saunders, VP - Forecasting at ABI Research. “But carriers should not be panicking - it is seeding the market with 4G handsets. CUPERTINO, Calif.-Apple says people have downloaded more than 40 billion apps on for the iPhone, iPad and the iPod Touch, nearly half of them in 2012. Apple Inc. said Monday that December saw record downloads of more than 2 billion apps. There are 775,000 individual applications available in the app store. Apple says it has paid app developers more than $7 billion. Apple launched its app store in 2008. The store hit the 10 billion downloads mark in early 2011. LAS VEGAS—Lego bricks are getting cozy with the ¡Phone and other Apple devices in the latest incarnation of the Mindstorms robotics kit. Lego announced Monday that a new, $350 Mindstorms EV3 kit will have the ability to talk to ¡Phones, ¡Pads and ¡Pod Touches through Bluetooth wireless connections. That means Lego builders can use the devices as remote controls for their robots, or create simple programs that are then sent to the robots to control their actions. Lego said the kit will go on sale in the second half of the year. It was announced as the International CES gadget show begins in Las Vegas this week. KICK THE BOSS 2 I don't normally do reviews on or play a lot of these “doll punishment” games, which is chiefly due to the fact that the market as been flooded with cookie-cutter versions and blatant rip offs that offer very little fun factor. But Kick the Boss 2, from Game Hive Corp, is one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had on iOS. This game is also a riot for all you hard workers out there who have a terrible boss. WASHINGTON - U.S. antitrust regulators say they have found no evidence to claims that Google unfairly favors its own services in search results. The Federal Trade Commission also says Google is agreeing to license patents deemed to be “essential” for rival mobile devices such as Apple Inc.’s iPhone and iPad. Regulators say Google is also promising that upon request, it will exclude snippets copied from other websites in its summaries of key information, even though the company had insisted the practice is legal under the fair-use provisions of U.S. copyright law. Samsung is expected to widen its lead over Apple in global smartphone sales this year with 35 per cent growth, helped by a broad product line-up, according to market researcher Strategy Analytics. Apple could roll out a smaller, cheaper “iPhone Mini” next year to grab market share by targeting demand from users of lower-end smartphones, Strategy said. “We expect Samsung to slightly extend its lead over Apple this year because of its larger multi-tier product portfolio,” Neil Mawston, Strategy executive director said. Apple has poached Vimeo’s European head of PR, Nikki Thompson, for a senior PR role within its UK comms operation. PRWeek understands that Thompson will lead comms for Apple’s hardware devices, including the iPad, iPhone and iPod, across Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa. It is understood that Thompson replaces Nick Grange, who Apple confirmed has departed the business. Grange joined Apple alongside Rob Saunders in a highprofile strengthening of its comms team in 2011. Grange joined from Activision, where he was head of European PR. He had previously headed X-Box PR at Microsoft. Before Vimeo, Thompson was an account director at JCPR and previously worked at Weber Shandwick, Hotwire and Ranieri Communications.
