A labor rights group has accused a supplier of Apple Ine. in China of misconduct including with holding employees’ pay and environmental violations. The report Monday by China Labor Watch said it found violations of the law and of Apple’s pledges about working conditions at facilities operated by Pegatron Corp., a Taiwanese company. Apple said in a statement it was “committed to providing safe and fair working conditions” and would investigate the claims. Pegatron, in a separate statement, also promised to investigate. Apple said an investigator for the company confirmed one accusation by China Labor Watch - that Pegatron was holding the identity cards of some workers - and ordered the company to stop.…

Beauty is in the wearer. At least that’s what the Internet search giant hopes a handful of young filmmakers will discover. Google is enlisting film students from five colleges to help it explore how its wearable computing device can be used to make movies. The $1,500 Google Glass headset is already being used by 10,000 so-called explorers. The device resembles a pair of glasses and allows users to take pictures, shoot video, search the Internet, compose email and check schedules. As part of its experiment, Google will lend each school three pairs of Google Glass. Taiwan smartphone maker HTC Corp. reported an 83 percent drop in second quarter profit amid intensifying competition in the smartphone market. HTC said Tuesday its profit totaled 1.2 billion New Taiwan dollars ($40 million) on revenues of NT$70 billion in the three months through June. The company predicts revenue to drop to between NT$50 billion and NT$60 billion in the third quarter as highend smartphone sales appear to have reached their peak. Rivals Apple Ine. and South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co. have felt similar pressure as the high-end handset boom gives way to growing demand for mid-range models. To say that uncertainty has surrounded Apple in recent times would be an evident understatement. Apple’s latest quarterly report showed savvy investors two things clearly. The first is that the entity run by CEO Tim Cook essentially has been transformed from Apple, the company, into Apple, the bank. Russia’s largest search erigine, Yandex, says its co-founder llya Segalovich has died. He was 48. Yandex director general Arkady Volozh said that Segalovich died Saturday at a London hospital. Volozh said in the company’s blog that Segalovich was diagnosed with stomach cancer last year. He responded positively to chemical therapy, but then developed a brain cancer that caused his death. Yandex announced Segalovich’s death Thursday, but corrected itself within hours, saying that he was on life support with no brain function. Volozh said doctors removed life support after it became clear Segalovich couldn’t be saved. Segalovich, 48, founded Yandex in 2003 with Volozhh, his school friend.
