The Vancouver-based designer Omer Arbel doesn’t give his projects names; he prefers numbers, based on their order of completion. This means that 2.4 is a striped resin chair that he created in 2003, and 84 is a glassbubble light, lined in copper mesh, developed in 2016. A rather more recent completion is 91, a family holiday house hiding in a forest on an island off the coast of the British Columbian city. The husband-and-wife owners moved in last year. Clad in heavy end-grain cedar blocks, sandblasted to a muted and almost rocklike finish, the house disappears into its landscape of trees. At night the home glows like a lantern among the branches. AS A CHILD GROWING UP in Greensboro, North Carolina, Elliott Hundley formed his conception of how artists live based on cinematic archetypes of painters and sculptors roughing it in bohemian splendor in converted industrial spaces. “I was obsessed with the idea of New York artists in these huge lofts, like Nick Nolte in New York Stories. That was my fantasy of how I wanted to live,” Hundley recalls. The romantic image proved indelible. For the past decade, Hundley has made his home and studio in a former engine factory built in 1907 in the Chinatown neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles. In 1997, Ilkka Suppanen debuted the AirBag chair as part of “Snowcrash,” an exhibition of furnishings for the digital age. “We just went to the factories, found a textile, and started sewing,” he explains of the seat, designed with fellow Finn Pasi Kolhonen to be slouched for playing video games. Now Suppanen (pictured) has rolled up his sleeves for the show “Stereo Bloom,” which opened on May 19 at Ralph Pucci gallery in New York. I’m a proud pack rat,” says artist Sophie Stone glancing around her Long Island City, Queens, studio, which brims with stacks of fabric. There’s everything from 19th-century crazy quilts to vintage napkins, even a bag of stretchy strings. All are fodder for her intricate textile works, a parallel practice to her floral-design studio. Stone, who studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, always preferred unexpected surfaces to canvas, accumulating found objects, foamcore, cardboard, cloth, and more on which to apply brushstrokes. Western audiences are perhaps less familiar with komorebi, a word that refers to the ethereal phenomenon of dappled sunlight leaking through trees. The Los Angeles home of Danny Duncombe and Kate Parfet makes a compelling case study for komorebi’s subtle power and grace. Located in the eastside neighborhood of Mount Washington—an area that boasts an array of significant modernist dwellings by the likes of John Lautner, A. Quincy Jones, Rudolf Schindler, James DeLong, and Harwell Hamilton Harris—the house was built in the early 1950s by a designer who lavished attention on its hand-carved, hand-finished wood cabinetry, doors, windows, and architectural details. Tucked along a backstreet of Milan’s charming Cinque Vie neighborhood, the courtyard of Laboratorio Paravicini is wrapped in ivy and jasmine. But for the cult ceramics atelier’s latest collection, Jardin à l’Italienne, founder Costanza Paravicini and her three daughters looked to historic gardens for inspiration. “We began sketching with the desire to create a decorative language both classical and new,” says the family matriarch, reflecting on the 10 hand-painted motifs, which range from skinny potted trees on bread plates to undulating hedges on chargers. IF YOU RECOGNIZE the great domed silhouette of Castle Howard in North Yorkshire, England, it might be because you remember either the 1981 television production or the 2008 film version of Brideshead Revisited, based on Evelyn Waugh’s classic novel of class, aristocratic English Catholics, and World War II. In both adaptations, Castle Howard stood in for the stately house at the center of the drama. But the Baroque palace’s own story is even more captivating than any fictional account, as Remy Renzullo, the young American interior designer currently working on the still-private residence’s update, can attest.
