Institute of Contemporary Arts, London and Artspace, Sydney Helen Johnson’s densely layered large-scale canvases explore the complexity of the colonial relationship between Australia and Britain. Her exhibition, ‘Warm Ties’ was comprised of six newly commissioned works that resituate 19th-century images of the white man as an imperialist brute, a sycophant and a greedy solipsist. In one painting, a man pleasures himself as the lyrics to the Australian national anthem are whispered into his ear, a portrait of Queen Victoria cloaked in shackles looks on; while in another the working class get ‘screwed’ by the wealthy elite, further emphasised by dole lines, money notes and subtle yet provocative leg spreads. ‘Master of Stillness’ documents the practice of expatriate Australian painter, Jeffrey Smart; from his beginnings in Adelaide until his last major composition Labyrinth (2011), painted in Italy, where he lived until his death in 2013. Illustrated with paintings of urban landscapes, studio shots with the artist at work, as well as personal and professional photographs, this book provides a unique insight and understanding of Smart’s career. Curator Barry Pearce questions: ‘What was the genesis of Smart’s preoccupation with parallel lines, cubes, spheres, curves and rectangles as the foundation of his visual language? In her 11th show at King Street Gallery, Jenny Sages addresses the magic of memory, and the effect of forgetfulness on the self. The twenty-time Archibald Prize shortlisted artist has a reputation for exploring the deeply personal in her work; After Jack, a self-portrait of grief, won the People’s Choice Award in 2012. ‘Prosperity reminds us that the Western narrative of capitalism and the closely associated liberal ideas of social progress, democracy and self-determination have been built on the exclusion of Indigenous economies,’ writes Madeleine King, who curated Ryan Presley’s first major solo-exhibition at Institute of Modern Art earlier this year.
