The temporal distinctions of past, present, and future help categorise our experiences, establish our identities, and form alternate paths and new possibilities. Guided by social, cultural, and institutional factors, the artists and writers in this issue reflect on issues such as colonial histories, mortality, family connectedness, to name a few. “. . . the more I explore my identity, the more I am confident, or the more I seek to really represent those communities that I’m part of.” Marikit Santiago is one artist who found a silver lining from the gallery shutdowns and exhibition postponements generated since the pandemic. Her current exhibition, For us sinners, at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art in Sydney was originally scheduled for 2020 but became indefinitely delayed. “Whatever I create is a musing on persona, contemplation about individuality and the notion of modification.” For three decades, artist Rona Green has continued to explore and reimagine her observations of identity, personality, and transformation in the creation of playful human-animal mutations, which she brings to life in portraits made using a range of printmaking techniques and processes; namely monotype, linocut, lithography, digital printing, etching, and screen printing, as well as drawing, painting, and soft sculpture poppets. Carriageworks First Nations Fellowship We congratulate Kuku Yalanji/Yidindji multimedia and performance artist Henrietta Baird as the inaugural recipient of the new First Nations Fellowship and award developed by one of Sydney’s largest multi-arts venues, Carriageworks. Valued at $100,000, the new initiative is geared towards supporting First Nations artists to undertake a two-year research and development project for the creation of new work, backed by a contribution of $25,000 per year with additional support in the form of in-kind venue hire, production and producing opportunities. He struck a match. The cigarette, packed tightly with tobacco, smouldering between puffs; ash building; burning embers dropping to his feet. He takes a solid drag and then exhales. Repeat. He stands before his canvas, contemplating the next application of paint and subsequent movement of the brush. While this narrative is entirely fictional, it is this reader’s visualisation of the artist in the studio, creating the works that filled the gallery walls and now these pages.
