Bridie Gillman is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is informed by ideas of place and how experiences and memories shape our perspective of a site. Everyday observations can be easily disregarded or forgotten; in Gillman’s works, they are remembered and expressed in paint using colour and abstract gestures. Her work is responsive to emotion – nostalgia, belonging, comfort – just as much as it is to the visual. From 4 to 15 June, Sydney Film Festival celebrates its seventy-second program. Auto-Photo: A Life in Portraits tells the story of Alan Adler, likely the most photographed person in Australia and perhaps also the oldest and longest-serving photobooth technician in the world. Maintaining a suite of photobooths across Melbourne – a site near Flinders Street Station being the most notable –, Adler would undertake weekly testing and servicing on each machine across his network by taking a seat and producing a test strip of photographs. An archive of thousands upon thousands of self-portrait images was produced through his decades-long operation – the images in Auto-Photo spanning the 1970s to 2010s. The inherent repetition and simplicity of the photobooth has a particular charm. The framing, lighting, backdrop and time between photographs is all fixed with only we, the subject, the ones that change…

THIS IS NO FANTASY Until 28 June 2025 Melbourne This exhibition reflects the power of a place that is the same location yet has subtle changes over time, much like the remnant colonial haunting that sits as a cultural palimpsest where ghosts of past and present are manifest in the images. These works are performances for the camera captured at different times but always as light emerges. The place is a billabong in the reaches of the Yarra River, the Birrarung, on the Banyule Flats, Wurundjeri Country, which serves as a metaphorical and literal site of historical memory.…

Plimsoll Gallery 5 June to 27 July 2025 Tasmania This touring exhibition is the first survey of Brisbane-based, Waanyi artist Gordon Hookey, known for a biting satire of Australian culture and politics, witty critique of racism, and exploration of oral and image-based history-making traditions. Bayside Gallery Until 22 June 2025 Melbourne Established as the Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize in 2015 and relaunched in 2024 as the Bayside Painting Prize, this is the only annual prize for painting in Victoria. ‘Painting’ is defined here as a work made with a liquid medium applied to a rigid or semi-rigid support. In his first Australian solo exhibition, Mona presents a selection of kinetic sculptures that push matter to their edges – from dripping metal to splintering wood. Lezlie Tilley is an artist who has a clear understanding of her process, influences and the ideas that underpin her practice. She has been a practising artist, educator and mentor for more than forty years.
