THE ERUPTION of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE caused widespread devastation. The ash that buried Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae preserved the art and culture of the era for future generations. Concerted recovery efforts began in 1738, when Charles of Bourbon, son of King Phillip of Spain and newly crowned King of Naples and Sicily, commissioned survey work near Herculaneum. In subsequent decades, the Bourbon crown drove archaeological efforts in the region. A new exhibition at Dallas’ Meadows Museum serves as a retelling of this history, emphasizing the importance of Bourbon patronage. The Legacy of Vesuvius: Bourbon Discoveries on the Bay of Naples, on view through January 5, 2025, provides not only a history of early excavations and archaeological discourse but also the crown’s role as tastemakers during the Neoclassical resurgence.…

THIS FALL Harvard Art Museums present Made in Germany? Art and Identity in a Global Nation, on view September 13, 2024-January 5, 2025. Works in a range of media produced by 23 artists serve as a reflection on the nation state and complicate our understandings of national identity and belonging. Work on exhibition critically examines Cold War division and subsequent reunification. Ulrich Wüst cataloged everyday East German objects for his photobook Hausbuch (House Book). The stark and unalluring coffee grinder in Nachlass Wiegmann #41 (1990) would have been immediately replaced after reunification. The image stands as a testament to a lost way of life. BERRY CAMPBELL Gallery presents Bernice Bing: Bingo, on view September 12-October 12, 2024. Affectionately known as Bingo (1936-1998) to friends and colleagues in the Bay Area, the Chinese American abstractionist was, until recently, underknown. Her gestural compositions offer new ways to consider the intersections of identity and abstraction. Born in San Francisco, Bing was raised in foster care. Attending Caucasian, middle-class schools, in a city still deeply steeped in the legacy of the Chinese Exclusion Act, she struggled to assimilate but sought solace in art. She got her BFA at the California College of the Arts, studying under Richard Diebenkorn and Saburo Hasegawa and later received an MFA. She was especially impacted by Hasegawa’s merger of Japanese tradition and Western abstraction. Bing participated in the North Beach Beat Generation…

A PART OF Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal, the Federal Art Project (FAP) provided relief for the creative industry. In addition to municipal art commissions and the foundation of community art spaces, the project also brought art into communities through gift collections and travelling exhibitions. On view through April 13, 2025, The Work of Art: The Federal Art Project, 1935-1943 features 58 works from 256 paintings and works on paper originally gifted to the Saint Louis Art Museum (SLAM) in 1943. The new SLAM exhibition places emphasis on artists from historically marginalized groups. Many of these works were exhibited at the city’s first interracial community art space, the People’s Art Center (1942-1965). IN THE POST-World War II period, contemporary artists have changed the way we look at art and what we consider art. One of these is Larry Bell, a leading figure of Southern California’s important “Light and Space” movement. Phoenix Art Museum is currently featuring a survey of his work, “LarryBell: Improvisations” (through January 5, 2025), which highlights his creative development. From glass cubes, to mixed media on paper, to recent glass sculpture, we see that his achievements have been both technical—harnessing technology used for other industries such as industrial manufacturing—as well as aesthetic. IN 1965, Buffalo AKG Art Museum—then the Albright-Knox Art Gallery—staged Art Today: Kinetic and Optic, exploring the work of new-to-the-scene Op artists and their Kinetic art peers. Now, almost 60 years later, the museum will stage Electric Op, recounting Op’s early history and stressing its connection with electronic art and creative practice in the Information Age. BRENDA LOUIE’S vivid Abstract Expressionist paintings draw from a range of influences that have shaped her artistic practice over the last forty years. Born in China in 1953, Louie received her initial training in art from her father, a master Chinese calligrapher who emphasized the aesthetic and philosophical underpinnings of traditional painting alongside the medium’s meticulous technical skill. By the time she entered Stanford University to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree in the early 1990s, her interest in combining modern painting techniques with the formalism of traditional Chinese art led her to explore the intersections between her own experiences as an immigrant artist and the potential of gestural abstraction as a means of communicating the spiritual and psychological dimensions of living between cultures. NEW YORK’S ONISHI Gallery, with support from KOGEI USA, will present two special fall exhibitions. On view October 3-11, 2024, The Spirit of Noto: Urushi Artists of Wajima and Waves of Resilience each highlight masterworks in lacquerware, a specialty of artisans in Wajima. The Spirit of Noto examines work with urushi, the sap of the Japanese lacquer tree, and features objects from three recipients of the Living National Treasure designation, including Yamagishi Kazuo (b. 1954) and Mae Fumio (b. 1940). Both are designees for their work in chinkin, or inlaid gold. Yamagishi’s Niga (Two Rivers) is a nakatsugi, or cylindrical matcha caddy, with bold black and red coloration and a thin line of incised gold. AFRICA’S OLDEST independent nation, Ethiopia is located along early trade routes connecting Europe and Asia and is notable for its cultural and religious diversity. Ethiopia at the Crossroads, on view at the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) through November 10, 2024, tracks the country’s artistic history and global impact across almost two millennia. A collaboration between the Peabody Essex Museum, the Walters Art Museum, and the TMA, the exhibition includes over 225 art objects, historical and contemporary. The exhibition is especially strong in Christian religious objects. Emperor Ezana first converted what was then the Kingdom of Aksum in the 4th century CE, and the region has a long history of devotional painting. A PUSH TO (re)discover works of art both in their own time and in discussion with a larger collection is at the heart of a new exhibition at Pennsylvania’s Westmoreland Museum of American Art. On view through December 8, 2024, The Great Search: Art in a Time of Change, 1928–1945 surveys art from the museum’s permanent collection and is supplemented by loans from Art Bridges and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “Paris 1874: The Impressionist Moment” at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., organized with the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, celebrates the 150th anniversary of the first impressionist exhibition. Of all the origin stories that exist in the field of art history, the birth of Impressionism is perhaps the most mythic. The exhibition, which opens on September 8, 2024, runs through January 19, 2025. It was first shown at the Musée d’Orsay earlier this year. It begins with the Paris Salon—the annual juried art exhibition sponsored by the French government which existed in various forms beginning in the late 17th century. Fantastic Fair THE ART SHOW, one of the nation’s premier philanthropic fairs, returns October 30 to November 2, 2024 at Manhattan’s Park Avenue Armory. Founded in 1989 by the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA), the event brings together member galleries from around the nation. Proceeds from a preview gala on October 29 will benefit long-time partner organization Henry Street Settlement, a non-profit assisting New Yorkers in need. AN EXHIBITION exploring Modern art from the South ends its tour this fall at North Carolina’s Mint Museum. On view October 26, 2024 to February 2, 2025, Southern/Modern is a collaborative effort between staffers at the Mint and the Georgia Museum of Art. Mint Senior Curator Jonathan Stuhlman, PhD, says the show celebrates another possible history of American art, and visitors can expect that many of the works on display “will be new discoveries.” In his catalogue essay, Stuhlman quotes the oftcited Metropolitan Museum of Art curator Joseph Downs, who believed, “little of artistic merit was made south of Baltimore.” Southern/Modern stands as a refusal of these prejudices. WHEN WE hear a far-off train, especially in the middle of the night, and think of the sound of the whistle as mournful, and feel a sense of nostalgia, we are participating, even if unwittingly, in a collective American emotion, a response chronicled in the artworks and scholarship in “All Aboard: The Railroad in American Art, 1840-1955,” a comprehensive exhibition at Vermont’s Shelburne Museum on view through October 20, 2024. IN JULY, OLEG Stavrowsky’s painting Rolling Through the Longhorns set an auction record for the artist after a dizzying bidding war between two prominent collectors. Originally estimated to sell between $8,000 and $12,000 at the annual Coeur d’Alene Art Auction in Reno, Nevada, the famed Western artist’s painting brought in $272,250 after a three-minute bidding war that broke out between a collector in the audience and another via phone.
