This issue celebrates the outcomes of the 2017 Australian Interior Design Awards, a partnership event of Artichoke and the Design Institute of Australia. If you’re a regular reader of design magazines and blogs, you’ll already know Sydney house Indigo Slam very well. The client briefed Smart Design Studio to make it the best home in the world, and after winning numerous national and international awards since its completion, it’s arguably achieved this goal. In studying Indigo Slam’s sculpted concrete facade, masterful use of light and elegant restraint, the AIDA jury was captivated too and awarded it the 2017 Premier Award for Australian Interior Design (page 42). Hardy Brothers store by Design Poets Jewellery retailer Hardy Brothers has opened a new retail store at Pacific Fair on Queensland’s Gold Coast, designed by Brisbane-based Khoa Nguyen from Design Poets. Nguyen was briefed to take the Pacific Fair Hardy Brothers store in a new direction, steering away from its traditional heavy and masculine feel. “With Hardy Brothers, I had to wrap my head around the security requirements – to design the space I had to think like a thief,” Nguyen says. Nguyen leant toward muted tones and focused on ensuring the product was illuminated to best effect. Award for Interior Design Impact supported by: WinnerInterior Design Impact DesignerWoods Bagot Jury statement — Paramount by The Office Space provides serviced offices that feel like home for professionals who appreciate good design. The project lives up to its name as an exemplar of the kind of private nest that knowledge workers dream about. The offices are small, perfectly crafted pieces of joinery furnished with a collection of art and artefacts sympathetic to the cues provided by the heritage building. The designers challenged existing conventions of workspace proportions and created spaces of about three square metres per person for individuals or small groups. Award for RetailDesign supported by: WinnerRetail Design DesignerGeorge Livissianis Jury comment — Jac + Jack’s gentle mix of luxe and grunge is reflected perfectly in the juxtaposition of its dirty base build and clean, seamless insertion. It’s an on-brand expression that couldn’t be more appropriate for the Australian fashion retailer’s fifth Australian store. The space, in Sydney’s Bondi, reminds customers they’re a stroll away from the beach and welcomes them with a warm wink. This was a strongly debated category because of the diversity of projects, but Jac + Jack’s immaculate planning sequence stood out to the jury. Positioning of point-of-sale in relation to the fitting rooms and visual connection with the product on display seamlessly remedies the everyday challenges surrounding customer service. Award for Workplace Design supported by: WinnerWorkplace Design DesignerBVN Jury comment — Frasers Property Australia Head Office stands out as a playful plan that one jury member described as “crazy looking.” Upon closer inspection, the project is very well planned in terms of space utilization, as the architects addressed the interior holistically, making no clear distinction between front and back of house. The organic layout eschews a traditional workstation arrange-ment in favour of a configuration that promotes serendipitous interaction. A strong wellness and innovation agenda drives the highly innovative scheme, with “third spaces” working to fullest potential. Frasers Property Australia’s mantra of relationships as central to business informs this people-focused design and creates a calm yet animated space devoid of gimmicks. Award for Residential Design supported by: WinnerResidential Design DesignerSmart Design Studio Jury comment — Indigo Slam stands head and shoulders above the rest of the projects in this category. It’s a truly unique project that looks like it could last 100 years, which is exactly what the client, a gallery owner and philanthropist, wanted. The sculptural forms of the design successfully amplify the home’s robustness and highlight its amazing quality of light. There’s a determinedly monastic feel to the interior and this is articulated via a sequence of spaces that are grand in both scale and proportion. Yet there are pockets of intimate domesticity, a gentle reminder that as impressive as this project appears, it is a home to be lived in. The fact it also serves a civic purpose…

The word “design” is somewhat slippery in common usage. How can we clarify its meaning to better communicate its benefits to Australia? And what benefits could accrue from introducing this kind of thinking into secondary education? The design profession in Australia emerged in the late 1940s and developed rapidly, but public awareness and education did not keep pace and went down different paths, determined in part by the media. Design is now unquestionably a potent tool for social development in almost everything humans need or want. My interest in establishing a design-based approach in schools to provide more effective learning goes back to 1965, when I visited a high school near Birmingham in the UK. Located in the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Melbourne Museum, it embodies a new approach to conventional anthropology by telling this narrative in the first person. The primacy of the storyteller – their identity and their voice – has profoundly shaped the consultation process, the resolution of the display spaces and the visitor experience. The exhibition was created in partner-ship with a reference group of sixteen respected Aboriginal community elders who became known as the Yulendj Group. Yulendj is a Kulin word for “knowledge and intelligence.” Their contribution is celebrated in the exhibition with a series of individual totems…

WinnerHospitality Design DesignerDesignOffice Jury comment — Higher Ground’s design celebrates the amazing volume of what was a former power station in Melbourne’s CBD. To simply describe this project as a sophisticated example of adaptive re-use belies its conceptual and aesthetic rigour. The jury commends its redefining of the typical cafe typology into a high-end hospitality venue, more akin to a hotel lobby than a casual eatery. While the industrial appearance of its former use remains, the expertly integrated services, overall fine detailing and furniture and lighting selection are exemplary. Intimate niches are created at various platforms across six changes in level throughout this tall interior so patrons can engage in quiet conversation or simply sit and enjoy the expansive internal view. Award for Public Design supported by: WinnerPublic Design Designer PTID Jury comment — This teaching, research and engagement centre in the University of Melbourne’s Melbourne Graduate School of Education embodies an overtly exaggerated response to the brief. It’s a mix of different spaces that are flexible not unlike a Transformer. Through progressive innovation, StudioFive breaks new ground in pedagogical environments by pushing the capabilities of each zone with more daring than is expected. The interior’s robustness feels brave and confident and this lends the project longevity. Breakout areas add a domestic scale to the overall scheme and create room to either retreat quietly by oneself or collaborate in a group. Award for Residential Decoration supported by: WinnerResidential Decoration DesignerSJB Jury comment — What struck the jury most about this extremely confident and beautiful interior styling is the designer’s sensitive and thoughtful approach in delivering an outcome that responds to the needs of a mature-aged client. With this in mind, the scheme eschews trends and instead celebrates the building’s grand heritage. The interior’s timeless quality resonates with a sense of luxury, which is best expressed in the generously proportioned yet finely detailed bathroom. Furnishings in the living areas embrace the Victorian period and each room is given its own character through a distinct furniture selection. The client wanted “the best house in the world” and she arguably got it in the form of a sculpture to be lived in. Indigo Slam is ambitious in scale, plan and gesture and its artisanal delivery is defined as much by a sense of thoughtful restraint as it is by immaculate detailing. Award for Sustainability Advancement supported by: WinnerSustainability Advancement DesignerCox Architecture Jury comment — The 6 Star Green Star rated University of Queensland Oral Health Centre is humanistic interior design at its very best. As the largest public dentist in the southern hemisphere, its environmentally sustainable design features are excellent – it has solar power, on-site water treatment and reclaimed building materials and, particularly significant for a structure of this scale, it is 30 percent naturally ventilated. But what most impressed the jury is the project’s clearly applied holistic design approach that prioritizes social sustainability and wellness. By wrapping the space in permeable cotton cord to screen the heritage brickwork, the designers have successfully unified the interior of the iconic former Reader’s Digest Building in one slick move. The Brutalist architecture is softened as much as it is celebrated. The jury applauded this genuinely inventive concept, which transforms the space for maximum impact and results in a scheme displaying undeniable innovation and experimentation. Award for Installation Design supported by: WinnerInstallation Design DesignerStudioplusthree Jury comment — Egyptian Mummies at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum takes visitors on an emotive and highly experiential journey. Showcasing six Egyptian mummies from the British Museum’s collection, this temporary exhibition’s planning impressed the jury because it is simply sensational. A logical sequence of space flows from room to room, creating a sense of discovery, heightened by the dramatic play of light and dark, and the use of rich immersive colour. The jury was equally impressed by the installation’s strong atmospheric qualities and ability to talk of the human condition through the use of CT scans of mummies and full-height location photographs that evoke a sense of dry heat and dust. Award for Emerging Interior Design Practice supported by: WinnerEmerging Interior Design Practice Jury comment — Although Brad Swartz won the Apartment or Unit category at the 2015 Houses Award, he is still very much a new player, having established Brad Swartz Architects in May of that year. While it’s his only major accolade to date, the jury predicts many more to come. Swartz’s current portfolio predominantly consists of apartments and his two entries in the Residential Design category, Milson’s Point Apartment and Darling Point Apartment, exemplify his elegantly restrained aesthetic and beautiful detailing. The jury is impressed by his philosophy, which advocates a less-is-more ethos by making small spaces work harder.
