This is a special issue. For seventeen years, Artichoke has been presenting the results of the prestigious Australian Interior Design Awards. And, despite the health and economic challenges we are all grappling with, this year is no different. Each year, the awards garner amazing entries in all categories and 2020 is no exception. Now more than ever is an opportune time to reflect on the incredible quality of design being produced by this country’s designers through surveying this year’s winners, commendations and shortlist. We should all acknowledge and congratulate the innovative and talented designers who conceive these inspiring projects, as well as those who commission these works and those who give them built form. Winner Sustainability Advancement Designer Jackson Clements Burrows Architects Design statement — Gillies Hall has set a new benchmark in the industry for low-carbon construction and sustainable building design. Through its sustainable initiatives, it puts the health and wellbeing of its residents first and foremost. While the project was challenging, the outcome offers healthy, comfortable and engaging spaces for its students to live and study in. Interior spaces are generous, well ventilated, have consistent interior temperatures and offer rich views to its leafy native bush campus setting. The architecture and interiors are an exploration of joy and whimsy. The folding facade skin’s five hues of burnt orange explore a dramatic response to the building’s bush campus setting, while the interiors continue this dialogue in a manner that cherishes community and cohort.…

Winner Retail Design Designer Hecker Guthrie Design statement — Script is born from a place of discovery. Toying with ideas of encounter and science, Script Skincare’s unique interior is defined by a futuristic, yet human-centred design approach. The interior experience is multifaceted; deliberately playful elements such as the luminous blue surfaces and objects are layered among a rigorous internal structure. Having a client at the cutting edge of their sector gave Hecker Guthrie the opportunity to design a retail space that rejects preconceptions about what it means to execute a beauty retail offering. By effectively communicating the Script brand values through an androgynous, scientific, future-forward aesthetic, Hecker Guthrie has provided a clear delineation between Script and its peers. Winner Emerging Interior Design Practice Practice profile — Connecting over identical fashion choices on the nervous first day of architecture school in 2004, the two founders of Fowler and Ward have developed a young architecture practice founded on a sixteen-year friendship based on an aligned style and a shared interest in socially minded design. As proud alumni of Clare Cousins Architects, and with multi-scale experience in Australia and the United States, both directors draw on well-honed design skills learnt in firms that define contemporary Australian design practice. Since the practice’s full-time inception in 2018, nine projects have been completed including two office fitouts, a gym, retail store, several residential renovations and two residential new builds. Arts Epicentre by Branch Studio Architects In its design for a new cultural hub at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College in Braybrook, Melbourne, Branch Studio Architects approached the brief as if it were for a public performing arts building. The facility caters to dance, drama, music and fine arts programs, while also accommodating large gatherings and performances. A central atrium is a meeting point for the disciplines and serves as an adaptable performance space. A folding steel and glass door connects this space to its surrounds, while four ply-clad light catchers suspended from the ceiling are a nod to a small domed space admired in the building that previously occupied this site. Winner Premier Award for Australian Interior Design Joint Winner Hospitality Design Designer Hassell Design statement — Restaurant, art gallery, institution – a unique crossing of Australia and Italy that is unlike anything else yet still represents the character of Di Stasio. Working in an existing shell, all the building faults and mistakes were hidden behind plasterboard and aluminium cladding. Hassell stripped everything back to the bare structure, revealing the concrete cracks and celebrating them. Originally, planning was restricted by the location of the bathrooms, which were forced to the centre of the main restaurant. A lengthy town planning battle finally allowed the bathrooms to occupy a narrow corridor on the facade. The outcome is Reko Rennie’s neon camouflage Visible Invisible that adorns the facade. Entering ceramicist Nicolette Johnson’s humble home studio in Brisbane, one is immediately filled with a sense of serenity and reminded of the importance of slowness and time. Inherent to ceramics generally, time exudes from Johnson’s vessels and their highly detailed surfaces. Working with throwing and coiling techniques (small pieces are thrown and large pieces coiled), the form of each vessel is constructed and allowed to turn leather hard before Johnson begins the repetitive and almost meditative process of hand-building the countless “protrusions” that cloak her vessels. Johnson comments on the labourious process and its physical effect on her body, in particular the protrusions, which share an affinity with mark-making artists such as Agnes Martin, whose paintings are geometric, meditative in their repetition and have been described as an “essay in…

Winner Interior Design Impact Designer PTID Design statement — StudioFive is a teaching, research and engagement centre, based in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE), repurposed from an existing office building. From its early inceptions, the project took as its underpinning a need to design for a future that is not yet known. StudioFive’s core deliverable is arts teaching at the MGSE, however, through PTID’s in-depth briefing, the design team uncovered a broader aspiration that was distilled into five domains: Space, Pedagogy, Artistry, Community and Engagement. Space is innovative, flexible, and intuitive, allowing all manner of experiential encounters to take place. Pedagogy are environments in which artful and innovative approaches to teaching are practiced and reflected upon. Winner Workplace Design Designer Melanie Beynon Architecture and Design Design statement — The design team drew on Warwick’s expertise to create a timeless, sleek and sophisticated space that meets the client’s needs now and into the future. The symmetrical white interior provides the perfect counterbalance to the bright colours and textures in Warwick’s textiles, allowing the product to take centrestage. Every aspect of this innovative design maximizes efficiency and accuracy, inspiring creativity and improving productivity within the space. The colours of the textile range can be consistently viewed in this colour-managed interior with the use of six skylights generating an abundance of natural light throughout the workplace without the reliance on artificial light sources. Joint Winner Installation Design Designer Studio Goss Design statement — The project presents a bold yet understated exhibition space to launch Australian lighting brand Articolo in the European market at Salone del Mobile, Milan in 2019. The space was designed as a quiet refuge from the surrounding noise of one of the largest trade fairs in the world. The brief was to present a collection of products in a manner that best represented the brand and stood out among the thousands of other exhibitors. The internal space is partially concealed to passers-by with a single light fitting anchoring a deeply recessed entry portal, further delineated with a steel threshold and over-scaled walls conveying a sense of mass and solidity. Winner Residential Decoration Designer YSG Design statement — Honed with an artisanal energy that celebrates whimsy and functionality, this hard-edged freestanding coastal house was transformed into a tactile haven. Celebrating nuanced colour and sculptural forms, Budge Over Dover features highly customized finishes and furnishings, nooks for respite and open areas that enhance interaction between inside and out. The clients wished to create a fresh start in their newly purchased home. Almost all the furnishings were custom-designed and purchased to imbue a nurturing, sculptural atmosphere thanks to myriad rounded elements and abundant natural materials.
