This has brought on a boom in wellness spaces and a re-imagining of traditional self-care environments, such as beauty studios, gyms, yoga centres and hair salons. Designing for wellness interiors involves understanding how people want to feel, physically and psychologically, and the paradox of creating a private, personal space that will serve the public. Central Park Tower by Woods Bagot In this vast lobby refurbishment, Woods Bagot has revitalized the previously disconnected and outdated ground-floor plane of Central Park Tower in Perth. Supplanting the aged austerity of the original space, the refurbishment brings lightness and elegance to the lobby experience while respecting the base building architecture. The key drivers of the design were to reinforce the sense of community and enhance visual connection to the surrounding park landscape. The design team pushed the boundaries of what a commercial lobby can be, introducing vibrant social spaces, bookable business and meeting pods, and open business lounges. The refurbishment includes gallery and function space, new washrooms, lift-car interiors, new northern and southern facades, a reworking of major entries, exterior landscaping, and the ambitious and celebrated Hemingway Cafe.…

Abuzz. Joey Scandizzo Salon is absolutely abuzz when I visit at six o’clock one evening in late November 2020. The atmosphere of fun, however, belies the intense focus, care and attention to crafted detail that distinguish this interior. The salon, which aims to be at the forefront of the hairdressing industry, had occupied its nineteenth-century former bank building on Toorak Road for a number of years in an unrenovated state. The second Victorian COVID-19 lockdown was therefore the perfect time for a complete renewal. NGV Outdoor Pavilions by Boardgrove Architects Boardgrove Architects has designed a collection of pavilions for the National Gallery of Victoria’s 2020 Triennial summer outdoor dining program. Situated in the NGV Garden, the pavilions are nestled under trees and next to permanent sculptures and temporary Triennial installations. They are part of a wider celebration of art and music in the garden and operate in two states: predominantly, they are used as picnic pavilions, but for a month, they operate as formal dining spaces. The pavilions sit next to a powerful Triennial artwork by French street artist JR about the Murray Darling Basin. Take a long chain by each end and hold it up in front of you. Gravity will pull it – naturally – into a catenary curve. Invert that curve and you have a catenary arch. Arches with this most efficient self-supporting geometry have been an architectural staple through the ages, used in vernacular, Medieval, Gothic and Renaissance architecture, and most notably and comprehensively in early modern times by Antoni Gaudi, particularly at his famous Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. The Light Years Skin Studio was created through a virtual collaboration between Melbourne-based designer Geraldine Maher of Maher Design and her client, Megan Jurisich. Located in the Oracle Boulevard development at Broadbeach on Queensland’s Gold Coast, the project also represents a triumph against adversity – an innovative new business designed, constructed and launched in four months during pandemic-response conditions that brought many others down. In its underpinning ethos, Light Years responds to the new world order with a business model built around a low-to-no-touch, short-duration service of light therapy treatments within individual, socially distanced “micro retreat” spaces. Although ostensibly a “beauty treatment” space, Light Years feels like something different, something new. The world of Hattie Molloy is a magical one. And it smells good, too. Since establishing her practice four years ago, the floral artist has been bringing a new kind of floristry to showrooms, events and stores across her home town of Melbourne. Mixing a sense of playfulness with elegance, Molloy loves the weird and wonderful as much as she values beauty. With their arresting fusions of colour, form and texture that push the boundaries of traditional flower arrangement and blur the line between art and design, her installations, sculptures and displays are in demand. Molloy knew from a young age that she wanted to surround herself with flowers. “My nanna had an amazing garden and so I was always making posies,” she says. “I was obsessed with flowers.” But…

Empowering and aspirational, the design of Fox Fit seeks to inspire individual achievement while bolstering a vibrant culture of health and wellbeing. Executed by Mim Design, the “fitness for females” brief presented an opportunity to translate the strength of the Fox Fit brand into a memorable and motivational experience for visitors, new and returning. Inserted into the lofty proportions of a red-brick, sawtooth-roofed warehouse in inner Melbourne, Fox Fit draws influence from the site’s robust industrial language, while introducing a strong design sensibility inspired by the “athleisure” lifestyle. Mim Design’s largely female team referenced their own fitness experiences and insights into women’s activewear to inform the design, consciously eschewing gendered stereotypes to create a sense of comfort, safety and approachability.
