And the two days of judging are always the best days of my working year. To be transported to incredible dining, drinking and retail interiors from around Australia and New Zealand, alongside industry leaders I look up to, and to engage with them in discussion and debate about the state of design, well, what’s not to love? Bird in Hand Winery by Enoki Enoki has created a private cellar door and boutique accommodation for Bird in Hand in the Adelaide Hills, as the family-owned winery expands its onsite capacity. Housed within a 100-year-old former dairy, the space for the winery’s “Flight Club” members is simple and restrained, yet thoughtfully considered. Two boutique accommodation suites flank the central public zone where tastings are held. To the rear, a private lounge is tucked behind the public zone, as a threshold between the cellar door and the private rooms. In the tasting room, golden timber panels stretch across the ceiling, creating a feeling of warmth that contrasts with the cool tones of the limestone tiles, steel-framed windows and charcoal bar unit. The second half of the twentieth century saw unprecedented transformation of our cities. Modernist ideas of architecture and planning swept aside thousands of years of tradition and collective knowledge, wiping the slate clean in the name of progress and profit. Sydney suffered devastatingly under this wave, losing much of its recent and Indigenous history. In the 1970s, the first rumblings of concern over the destruction of Sydney’s built heritage were given voice through local community groups and, later, union bans that successfully saved many historic buildings and neighbourhoods. The 1980s saw “facadism” as a concession between heritage and development. This kept the street front as an acknowledgement of the past, but nothing of the interior - a position that clearly implied that architecture was of value to society, but interiors?…

Design Institute of Australia (DIA) welcomes membership from designers in all design disciplines. It introduced its Accredited Designer program in 2003. For two decades now, the program has championed learning and development as a way for design practitioners to maintain the currency of their skills and knowledge and their relevance to the profession. For clients, identifying suitable designers can be complex, daunting and time-consuming. That’s why the Accredited Designer program distinguishes Australia’s most experienced and knowledgeable design practitioners and provides a formal marker for designers and their valuable reputations. Winner Best Bar Design Designer Dion Hall Location Melbourne, Victoria Jury comment — The jury members were impressed by the immersive, compelling and integrated experience that is the diminutive Music Room at Her, located in the new six-level venue on Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. In a first for the Eat Drink Design Awards, this space is a truly interactive experience, and it is magically shoehorned into an intimate volume no larger than the size of a double car space. Light, acoustics, music selection and visuals combine to create a unique experience for a small group of guests at any one time. The beautiful detailing riffs on the concept of the listener being contained entirely within a custom speaker box, and a conscious effort has been made to restrict the palette of…

Winner Best Identity Design Designer Congrats Agency Location Fitzroy, Victoria Jury comment — This venue is pervaded by a sense of fun and a “visit to Nonna’s house”-level of nostalgia. The identity design is a winner because it enthusiastically comes to the Rocco party and stays to share a glass of vino and a bowl of pasta. The typeface, the colours, the youthfulness and the attitude all sing from the same happy songbook. It’s light, it’s refreshing, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, it’s familiar and it’s good. Even the ashtray is memorable and was loved by the jury and none of us even smokes! The attention to detail includes graphic work for signage, napkins, menus and business cards, with even the uniforms, glassware badging and product packaging carefully considered.…

Winner Hall of Fame Designer Smith, Tracey, Lyon and Brock Location Melbourne, Victoria Hall of Fame reflection by the jury — Where does one begin with Pellegrini’s? Too long left out of the Hall of Fame, this little espresso bar is still going strong 68 years after the architect Smith, Tracey, Lyon and Brock first submitted its charming design drawings to Melbourne City Council for approval. Little has changed since 1954. The current proprietor, David Malaspina, is committed to keeping every atom of Pellegrini’s just as it is right now - which is to say, just as it has always been. No renewal, modernization or renovation plans in sight; and that is just the way that David, his staff and his adoring patrons like it. In 1972, the two brothers…

At Queen and Collins by Kerstin Thompson Architects (KTA) and BVN, civic, architectural and commercial accomplishment unite flawlessly. The cultural scaffold for this significant achievement is the sustained period of built environment leadership, research and advocacy that has nurtured and cultivated the urbane life of Melbourne’s iconic CBD. Situating this ambitious renovation project within this sophisticated, metropolitan campaign recalls the overquoted saying, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” Coined by the legendary management consultant Peter Drucker in the early 2000s, this phrase is much more than business jargon. It is a keen observation that organizational cultures are always hungry and take longer to develop, sustain or shift than overarching strategies. From the jury — Considering what the hospitality and design industries have gone through over the past two-plus years, it was surprising and incredible that in 2022, the Eat Drink Design Awards received their highest number of entries ever - a sure sign of the resilience and tenacity of these industries that we love. Several related themes and observable trends made an impression on the jury this year. They are best understood when seen through the lens of our collective, not-quite-post-COVID moment as an Australian and indeed a global society. In uncertain, troubling times, the design community seems to be embracing a trend toward nostalgia and familiarity - one that is given form, thankfully, in original and innovative ways that avoid simple mimicry. Winner Best Retail Design Designer Studio Esteta Location Kew, Victoria Jury comment — Located in an old shoe-repair shop with a 1970s facade, this tiny venue and shopfront is notable for its comfortable, charming feel and its sense of engagement with the neighbourhood. The jury was won over by the qualities of the interior combined with the simple, direct, rollershuttered exterior facade. We can imagine the scene in the early morning, where the cranking of the roller shutter heralds the baking of a new day’s bread. In contrast to nearly every other entry in the category, this retail experience is “externalized” by these simple touches, which project the space outwards and result in a venue that is a combination of an Australian and a European bakery encounter. Winner Best Installation Design Designer CO-AP Location Adelaide, South Australia Jury comment — The elegance of The Summerhouse pavilion, combining versatility with equal-parts simplicity and sophistication, has resulted in a worthy winner. Like the venerable Spiegeltent before it, The Summerhouse can come and go with the festival it celebrates, creating a memorable setting for Adelaide Festival’s performances. In practical terms, the planning and resolution of services and movement of patrons and staff combine to keep back-of-house tucked neatly away and all action on the performances. There is a well-organized space for a sickle-shaped bar and an expansive central performance arena formed by the overlap of smaller and larger circles in plan: an elegant solution.
