1 How did you get involved in the antivenom program at the Australian Reptile Park? I started working with snakes and the antivenom program four years ago. Obviously working with snakes is one of the final steps of training when working with reptiles, so it takes a long time to prepare and train to be able to work with them. We started working with Australia’s most venomous snakes in the 1950s. We extract venom from some of the world’s most venomous snakes to produce antivenom, which contributes to saving around 300 people’s lives each year. Did you know that the sex of a green turtle is determined by the temperature of the sand incubating the eggs? Warmer temperatures produce females, and cooler temperatures produce males. And now, with increasing temperatures as a result of climate change, more females are being born, which is disturbing the natural gender ratio. Scarily, the northern Great Barrier Reef’s green sea turtle hatchlings are now almost exclusively female. The ratio is currently 116 females to every one male! Without enough males, babies will stop being born, putting this vulnerable species at even more risk. The Nest Cooling Project was launched in 2020 to solve this problem. Furry, curious and brilliant scavengers, our little nocturnal natives are true Aussie battlers. In Australia we have 27 types of possums and gliders. There is the lemuroid ringtail possum, who lives in Queensland and has greyish underparts; the common spotted cuscus, who has dark fur and a white tummy, kind of like a panda; the sugar glider, who has little white ears you can hardly see; and many more. Brushtail and ringtail possums are the most common possums. Ringtails are smaller than brushtails, and distinguished by the white tip at the end of their tails. There are also the lesser known tiny pygmy possums (see breakout box). And, like all native animals, they are protected by law.
