No baked dinner would be complete without the humble pumpkin and, with miniature and bush varieties, growing them does not have to take up masses of space in your backyard. However, if you have room, why not try growing your own pumpkins for soup, biscuits, bread, chutney, muffins or desserts such as pumpkin pie and cheesecake? They grow during the warmer months and are usually picked in autumn when the vine dies down and the stalks have turned brown. Larger pumpkins are ready to harvest if they sound hollow when tapped.
