Continuing my attempts to get to different areas around the country, this month we will visit rural Ohio and take a look at the city of Cadiz, the seat of Harrison County, located in eastern Ohio about 20 miles west of Steubenville and an equal distance north and northwest of St. Clairsville, Ohio, and Wheeling, West Virginia.
Cadiz is located at the junction of U.S. Routes 22 and 250. Established in 1803, residents named the town after the Spanish city of Cadiz, though locals pronounce the name of the town ‘K-diz’. The town was laid out at the junction of two roads. One road came from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the other came from Washington, Pennsylvania. Situated at this crossroads, Cadiz grew quickly.
