The bank note company De La Rue provides two core services for various governments, central banks and other commercial organizations around the world: printing currency and authentication. The company, which was established over 200 years ago, has confirmed that it is amid possible takeover talks in a strategic update that was published on May 30. The two divisions may be broken up or merged with another business. Small Size Red Seal $1 notes were printed in 1933 as a 1928 Series. They were not issued, however, until 1948 and 1949. They were released in Puerto Rico to avoid sorting problems when they were returned. The stars were all * A and only 7,892 were printed. The AA notes saw a printing of 1,872,012 so both versions were scarce, but the stars were exceptionally so. Here is my complete collection of these notes. My star is a Fine 15 because that’s all mybudget could afford. The AA note is a Gem, and they are available in the $400 to $500 range in gem. Rare Indian Bank Notes From Shipwreck Double Estimate Two 10-rupee bank notes that were recovered from the wreck of the SS Shirala, which was sunk by a German U-boat on July 2, 1918, sold for more than double their pre-sale estimates at Noonans Mayfair on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, in a sale of World bank notes. They were each estimated at £2,000-2,600 but fetched hammer prices of £6,500 and £5,500 respectively [lots 474 and 475]. As Andrew Pattison, Head of Banknotes Department at Noonans commented: “The two notes were bought by collectors of Indian notes, within India. This very attractive Series of 1902 note with a great college title is worth showing off simply for its title and eye appeal. However, it happens to contain an error. Can you spot it? No? Not a big deal because the problem is subtle and technical. The plate date, Sept 10, 1912, is incorrect. The bank was organized on Sept. 30, 1912, and chartered on October 30. The convention for dating plates for new banks, when this plate was made, was to use the date of organization. Either the paperwork had a glitch or less likely the letter engraved used the wrong day. JULY 2024 U.S. Paper Money Price Guide Recent auction results suggest scarce to rare US bank notes may be gaining in both desirability and value to what might be expected if they had been coins of the same significance. Demand may be beginning to outstrip supply as an increasing number of collectors are taking a serious interest in notes. There is also a possibility investors may be watching, but so far this is only an observation. With supply for many of the better notes being paltry, their value may continue to appreciate, possibly faster than some of their metal coin counterparts. What began as an article on double denomination errors has grown into an expansive examination that includes all double denomination notes, errors and nonerrors. There is a distinction between “Double Denomination Notes” and “Double Denomination Error Notes”. Not all notes that display two denominations are errors – sometimes they were created intentionally (on Fractionals and Obsoletes).
