Why would anyone be willing to pay a premium for a new bank note when you can go to your bank and ask for one at face value? This is a question some people in Japan may be asking themselves. Japan recently introduced a new series of bank notes. Some of the 1,000-yen denomination examples are being sold online at a premium. Current Japanese bank notes have serial numbers that begin with two letters followed by six numbers, then one additional letter. The earliest notes printed in a series begin with AA, then are followed by AB and other letters to mark the second and all other issues after the first one million notes. More than 400 world bank notes were offered in a Crown Currency sale on Sept. 18, 2024. A highlight in the sale was an Oman, Central Bank 2020 / AH1441 50 Rials Commemorative Specimen graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated EPQ (lot 332). This commemorative note pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of the modern Omani Renaissance and the late Sultan Qaboos bin Sa'id, who modernized his country during nearly a half-century of rule. The note features a portrait of the Sultan of Oman and the coat of arms of Oman on the front. For this particular catalog number, this note is the only Specimen in the PMG Population Report, alongside nearly 200 examples of the issued notes.…

Featured is a district set of 1950B FRN $5s. Nice set, so what? The thing the notes have in common is that the serials end with some zeros and a one. This is a series where numbering progressed from the Series of 1950A to 1950B. These notes happen to be the very first 1950Bs! Now we are talking about highly unusual and terrific numismatic items. I have always enjoyed first and last notes so over my collecting career I have attempted to obtain them when the opportunity presented itself. According to the Federal Reserve Bank, about 60 percent of financial transactions are made using either a debit or a credit card. Cash is the third most popular way through which payments are made within the United States. Harvard University economics professor Kenneth Rogoff is an advocate for withdrawing the 100-dollar bank note denomination. Rogoff, who is also a chess Grandmaster, crunched some numbers and has concluded that although more than half of our 100-dollar bank notes are held overseas there were still sufficient “C” notes availablein 2022 for every American to have 55 of them in their wallets. The left serial number on this note which went by as lot 21385 in the May 9, 2024 Heritage Central States Auction is simply a mess. This Series of 2017 $1 was numbered in a press run involving 50-subject sheets on an LEPE numbering press at the Washington, D.C. plant. The first six digits in the number heads are computer-controlled. The last two change mechanically as the press runs. These complicated machines number sheets in sequential groups of 100 (5,000 notes) from the highest to lowest serials. In this fashion, the lowest serials in each plate position land on the top of the group.
