On January 7, 1929, The Merchants National Bank of Allentown in Allentown, Pennsylvania, absorbed The Citizens Trust Company through consolidation, and that name was subsequently incorporated into its title. The bankers got out of the trust business, resulting in another title change on January 11, 1933. Thus, the first and third bank titles are identical right down to the article and prepositions in the bank name. An act of Congress signed into law on September 26, 1918, authorized national banks to open trust departments with the provisos that their states permit such activities and that they obtain a permit from the Federal Reserve Board to do so. Once referred to as arithmancy and primarily associated with astrology, numerology is the belief in an occult, divine, or mystical relationship between a number and one or more coinciding events. It can also refer to the study of the numerical value of the letters in words and names. A famous believer in this practice was Burma Socialist Programme Party army general, Ne Win (1911–2002), who was Burma’s* military dictator during the country’s socialist period (1962–1988). On November 3, 1985, the two highest denominations, the 50 and 100 kyats, were withdrawn from circulation. Being born, raised, and working in Detroit, it was only natural for me to develop an interest in collecting National Bank notes from my hometown. I began my collection with notes from the First Charter period and was fortunate to acquire examples of the $1, $2, $5, $10, and $20 denominations. These are the only known notes issued under Charter 116, making them exceptionally rare and historically significant. The $1 note is an attractive Very Fine 25, while the $2 note, although appearing to be a Very Fine 20, has a faded Treasury seal. For many Croatians, the switch marked more than just an economic shift; it brought an end to a familiar part of everyday life. But while the physical kuna has vanished from wallets and cash registers, its imagery is experiencing a surprising revival. Who will be printing Syria’s new bank notes? There is a lengthy answer to this question. In the French Mandates for Syria and Lebanon in 1920, the Lebanese-Syrian pound replaced the then-circulating Egyptian pound. This was referred to as the Syrian pound for the following four years, after which the French Ministry of Finance approved currency-issuing rights for the Bank of Syria for 15 years. Two similar series were issued, one bearing the name "Grand Lebanon" and the other identified as "Syria." Both circulated side by side, although they were meant to identify different political entities. Lebanon and Syria used the same currency until 1948. Bangladesh The Bangladesh Bank has released images of the South Asian country’s redesigned bank notes. The new series (Tk 2, Tk5, Tk 10, Tk 100, Tk 200, Tk 500) features colorful images inspired by the country’s historic and archaeological architecture. Abkhazia In June, the partially recognized state of Abkhazia in the South Caucasus introduced a commemorative 50-apsar note.
