Potatoes are categorised by the season in which they’re ready to harvest. Early – or new potatoes – are planted in March and harvested in late May to early July. Maincrop potatoes take longer to mature. Plant them in April and harvest in late summer/early autumn for crops to store into winter. Choose a site in full sun, ensuring there will be room for the branches to develop. If you have a small garden, trees can be trained and pruned as space-saving fans, cordons and espaliers against a wall, fence or trellis. Planting Plant blueberries in autumn or winter in full sun or light shade. The key to growing blueberries successfully is getting the soil conditions right. They need acidic soil, with a pH of between 4 and 5.5, and the texture should be light and free-draining, with lots of organic matter added to it. They need a sheltered, sunny spot, ideally against a wall so they can soak up the summer heat. Fig trees benefit from having their roots restricted. Ficus carica is native to Syria and Iran, and the idea is to trick the plant into thinking it is growing on a rocky hilltop in the eastern Mediterranean. Anyone can grow their own, no matter how limited the space. It’s a wonderful way to put fresh fruit and veg on the table, knowing it’s nutritious and delicious, and the only distance travelled is from the plot to the table. Everyone can have a go, and children love being involved. They’ll enjoy sowing large seeds such as courgettes, or planting strawberries – which are easy to grow and produce quick results. What you grow is up to you – if you hate cabbage, don’t grow it. Before you start, work out what your favourites are and how often your family eats them. Grow as much as you can of what you love to eat and make several separate sowings (known as successional sowing), so everything doesn’t ripen at the same time and swamp you. They can be grown successfully outdoors, but some varieties will crop more reliably if they have the heat and shelter of a greenhouse.
