Anyone can grow their own, no matter how limited the space. It’s a wonderful way to put fresh fruit and veg on the table, knowing it’s nutritious and delicious, and the only distance travelled is from the plot to the table. Everyone can have a go, and children love being involved. They’ll enjoy sowing large seeds such as courgettes, or planting strawberries – which are easy to grow and produce quick results. Don’t worry if you’ve got limited time or resources, as there’s still plenty you can grow. You can swap seeds with neighbours, family and friends or exchange produce when you’ve got too much. Beginners may think that raising plants from seed is something best left to those with bags of experience, but in fact it’s surprisingly easy, fun and rewarding. The diversity of vegetables you can grow may seem a little bewildering if you’ve never had a go before, but if you stick to what you like to eat you won’t go far wrong. What you grow is up to you – if you hate cabbage, don’t grow it. Before you start, work out what your favourites are and how often your family eats them.
