Only the fourth model in Bentley's history to wear the Supersports badge is by far the biggest swing of the bat. ‘Super Sports' v1.0 arrived exactly 100 years ago, was the first Bentley capable of 100mph and only 18 were ever built. The next came in 2009 – the pinnacle of the first gen Conti GT range – two seats, 100kg lighter and capable of 204mph. In 2017 the second gen Conti GT got a Supersports too – with a 700bhp version of the burly old 6.0-litre twin turbo W12, making it the most powerful Bentley ever at the time. Carmakers claim a lot of stuff that's easily shrugged off as cliched hyperbole, but whatever answer we find here, it's just going to be plain fun finding out, right? These are two of the most driver focused cars on sale. The Supersport strides a path once trodden (rather boisterously) by TVR. WELL, THIS WAS RATHER UNEXPECTED. Genesis – the luxury arm of Hyundai that so far has mostly focused on squishy saloons and chromed SUVs – is set to launch its very own supercar. And it'll be powered by a twin turbo V8 engine! The official release says that the Magma GT Concept you see here will be “the halo model guiding Genesis' long term performance strategy, including future GT racing ambitions”. BATTERIES ARE BULKY AND HEAVY and no one wants that. Worse, a lot of that excess stems not from the actual cells that store the electricity, but from structures designed to house and cool them. EVs use individual cells, wired in series to reach the approx 400V or even 800V that the drive systems use. Standard procedure is to package a number of cells, maybe two dozen, into a structure called a module. This is basically a metal box, incorporating wiring between the cells, and cooling channels. Multiple modules are fixed inside a bigger, stronger box. The battery pack. This sounds safe. The cells are mounted in three layers of box. If one group of cells fails, only that module needs replacing not the whole pack. But it's also wasteful.…

The finest failures in automotive history What is the point of a concept car? Probably requires more than a single whimsical page to properly answer. But if at least one purpose of a concept is to prepare the ground for a future production car, to gently expand a brand's Overton window, then Chrysler's Super8 was an absolute smash hit of a success. Introduced at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show it subtly ushered in not only a whole new juicy rear-drive architecture, but a whole new juicy V8 engine too. The Super8 didn't just tease, it delivered. That rear drive architecture was the LX platform, which within a few years would underpin the estimable Chrysler 300C and Dodge Charger. We'll confess to a limited understanding of the multiverse. As far as we can tell, it's the scientific theory that at key points of inflection, universes split off and run in parallel timelines, each one with a different actor playing Spider-Man.
