One of my favorite ways to store beads is on wall panels with coffee-cup hooks. I’ve used vintage door panels, but you can use scrap lumber that is painted or stained to match your workspace. NAOMI SMITH is a member of the Chippewas of Nawash nation and her community is located in Neyaashiinigmiing, Ontario. Adopted at a very young age by a non-native family, Naomi feels grateful that her adoptive parents encouraged her to learn about her heritage as an Indigenous Canadian. She remembers teaching herself how to do bead looming when she was just seven years old, saying “Somehow I knew I should be creating artwork with tiny glass beads.” When she eventually met her birth mother, who was also an artist, Naomi discovered that they shared a love of beadwork. They were both drawn to the magical quality of seed beads. The Indigenous name for seed beads is "manidoominens," which translates as "little spirits." THE MUSEUM OF BEADWORK STARTED with a dream. Heather Kahn and Kristina Skillin envisioned creating a space that would house a spectacular collection of beaded items from around the world, allow for guest artists to hold workshops, and inspire a new generation of students to learn the art of beadwork. Their dream is set to come to fruition in 2022, with the grand opening of the Museum of Beadwork in Portland, Maine.
