A really good ‘party house’ has certain requirements: big, open spaces, great acoustics, high ceilings and fabulous hosts that aren’t too precious. Enter architects Kerry Phelan and Stephen Javens who built their home in the ramshackle garage barracks of an old military building in Melbourne. The hardwood floor means no damage control is needed for spilt drinks, all the windows open up for circulation, the sound from speakers travels right through and there are balconies so guests can take a breather. “It’s a great entertaining house and instantly puts everyone in a good frame of mind,” says Stephen. “We’ve had some sensational parties where I danced for five hours and people didn’t leave until 4am,” says Kerry. “It was great for us – maybe not so great for the neighbours.”…

I had been feeling like a bit of a design imposter never having been to Milan during Salone del Mobile and this year I finally got to go and it was magnifico! I was fortunate to have former Belle editor Eric Matthews, now with French house Hermès, as my travel companion for a couple of days to preview the marque’s new homewares and interview its deputy artistic directors Charlotte Macaux Perelman and Alexis Fabry (p53). “Charisma comes from the tension between raw materials and the level of craftsmanship.” A BEAUTIFUL SUSPENSE PERVADED the standout Hermès installation at Teatro Vetra in Milan. Within an expansive pavilion designed by Mexican architect Mauricio Rocha built from humble bricks, new exquisite pieces from Collections for the Home 2016-2017 were suspended, propped and hung haphazardly with ropes and pulleys at precarious angles. The display was a clever reflection of the tension between the raw materials the house begins with and the exacting craftsmanship and attention to detail wrought upon each design. PATTY HAVA TAKES HER CUES from the universe, allowing for what she sees as gentle cosmic nudges in the right direction, as if in tune with some kind of predetermination. It’s hard to believe that not long ago this mock Georgian house was a puzzle of decorative architraves, dated grey-blue doors and detailed mouldings. While it had served its owners well for more than 30 years, the Melbourne residence was in need of an update. While architects Kathryn Robson and Chris Rak of Robson Rak Architects & Interior Designers acknowledged the building’s strong concrete structure, they sought to “reinvent it and give it a new identity for now, bringing it into 2016”. While the clients entertained the idea of downsizing or even tearing the house down altogether, Robson Rak embraced the challenge of an entire refurbishment. From the day she spotted it in the 1990s just around the corner from her home, interior designer Andrea Killen loved this cottage in Hunters Hill. Built in 1861 it was one of the first residences constructed in the distinctive pink sandstone quarried in the area. She was so smitten with the cottage that she scribbled a note to put in the letterbox saying, ‘If you ever sell this cottage, please sell it to me’. There was no response. As news spread of the unexpected and untimely death of Zaha Hadid, aged 65, from a heart attack in a Miami hospital on March 31, the tributes poured in. DESCRIBE YOUR OFFICE? My office and studio is a loft in a 1920s office building on the corner of Hollywood and Vine, in downtown Hollywood. My studio has one large room, a separate office space where my assistant works, plus a kitchen and bathroom, with shower.
