Everyday, cyclists are faced with saddle issues including numbness, sitbone pain, saddle sores, increased urinary frequency, impotence and lower back/pelvic/joint pain. Symptoms like these should not keep you from riding your bike. SADDLE WIDTH IS KEY If a saddle is too narrow, it creates pressure precisely where there shouldn’t be any, on fragile nerves and vessels. When pressure is experienced in sensitive areas, the numbness/pain/ urinary problems listed above will likely be experienced. SADDLE SHAPE IS CRITICAL The sit bones should lie completely flat on the saddle. A flatter profile is the only way pressure is relieved on the sensitive perineal area in men and the pubic arch area in women. 1 Saris Freedom SuperClamp 2-Bike / This recently updated rack stands out for its unique design: It mounts two bikes on a single bar, which gives it a low profile and makes it easy to access your trunk when it’s folded up. The rack now also tilts out, so you can get into a hatch or pickup bed even with bikes on. The slim design does mean that each folding arm secures a front and rear wheel at the same time, so you can’t position the clamps independently when loading two bikes. But there’s a sequence that makes it fairly painless (Saris has a good video), and different size mountain bikes fit well without conflict. CERVÉLO IS KNOWN for popularizing the aero road bike, and while the company certainly can build a great one, we’ve liked its light, stiff, and smooth R-series race bikes best. Cervélo just launched a new R5, and it is available in both rim- and disc-brake configurations. We got an exclusive first test of the new rimbrake frameset, which has a long list of claimed improvements over the outgoing model: Cervélo gave the bike more tire clearance, made it stiffer (by 21 percent at the head tube and 13 percent at the bottom bracket), and reduced its aerodynamic drag by 44 grams. Engineers also tweaked the handling—increasing bottom bracket drop by 4mm and stretching the chainstays by 5mm—to improve the bike’s stability. And Cervélo says it’s more vertically compliant. At the…
